There's an appropriate way to train when you're young and vigorous. There's a proper way to train when you enter the advanced years of your life. There's an appropriate way to train when you're sick, and there's a proper way to train when it seems no workout works.
Even in the face of death at the end of life, there is a form of training, most people get caught between fear of death and their hopes for immortality. Acceptance of death's inevitability as a natural thing at the time, is a form of training for the warrior.
Constant training, always adjusting the goal to the means at hand at your disposal, is the only way to cultivate the true strength that transcends all limitations.

Humanity

"To learn martial arts, you need people. Martial Arts cannot be learned watching video and training alone, it has to be connected with another person to learn. What we do is to study the behavior of the human being, and it is through the training as you will understand your humanity.
This is extremely important especially in this era of the internet where people can do everything without the need for physical contact with other people. As a result, people are forgetting the meaning of his humanity, and with this the meaning of life itself."

“The ultimate secret of martial arts is not found in shapes or kata. Those who lock themselves in shapes and katas get caught up by them and are unable to make free and natural movements. In a real combat or on a battlefield they will surely end up dead. The real secret lies within your heart. This is why people who aspire to martial arts must have a noble and true heart, even more so, they must keep it constant beyond adversity.”

Sections taken from a wonderful interview with Hatsumi Sensei by Sean Askew.

“….Get on the rhythm of life. Get in balance with it.

That is why I tell my students it does not matter how skilled one becomes in martial arts or even Ninjutsu for that matter, If one can not attain this balance or rhythm.
This is the basis for the Kihon Happo! Not the forms. If you keep practicing the form it does not produce any real results. Always doing the forms is a childish way to practice.

…Often I hear my students argue over topics like “the correctness of this form” or “this posture should be this way” and such. True battle or real fights are never correct. In form or spirit. It is not about that…

…This type of common sense or “obvious ways” are important. This is why I teach my students;

Jiyu-ni, atarimae-ni
Jibun de narai, jibun de ikiro!

Freely, common sensically,
Learn on your own, live on your own!

Recently I have started to understand this much more deeply. In and Yo are connected. Men and women are connected. Life and death are connected. Heaven and earth are connected. Light and dark are connected. Omote and ura are connected. Soke and generation after generation of teacher and students are also connected....
In my case I have reached this point simply through my connection with Takamatsu Sensei and the connection with my family.
In the modern world, differences in people's consciousness, religion, and thinking are causing much disorder, and the disorder is increasing. I believe the path to resolving this situation is “connection.”
