The results are published! Thank you very much to each person who nominated Great Lakes Audiology and voted in support of Dr. Keifer in 𝙏𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙤 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙋𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙧'𝙨 "Best of Toledo" 2025 campaign. Today is World Hearing Day. The World Health Organization wants to remind people that over 60% of hearing loss cases in children are preventable. They want to remind people to take steps to avoid preventable childhood hearing loss and to identify ear and hearing problems early in life to minimize the negative impacts of hearing loss later in life.

Great Lakes Audiology turned 13 this week! One common hearing aid issue that patients have had to mange through the years is changing the wax guards (filters) on their hearing aids when the amplification starts to lessen between check-ups. Here's a video tutorial Dr. Keifer created for patients several years ago that's just as helpful now as it was back then. In the video, He shows a great first step to take if ever one of your hearing aids starts to go a little quiet on you. There are variations between wax guard styles depending on the brand of hearing aids you own, but many brands have similar wax guard designs.

Great Lakes Audiology opened its doors 13 years ago this week. The goal then and now is to provide:

Apple recently released their latest software update - iOS version 26.2.1. Updates can sometimes trigger a BT disconnection between your hearing aids and your iPhone. Click on the link below for a refresher on how to get your Phonak hearing aids and phone re-connected if you ever lose your BT or app pairing.

There is hope for people who suffer from tinnitus, and we offer help to people with tinnitus here in our office.

Below are research results cited in an article by audiologist, Rachel Cook, about just how effective tinnitus treatment can be. The full article and video are posted in the comments section of this post.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY: "Studies show CBT is effective for 50-80% of tinnitus sufferers in reducing distress and improving quality of life."

TINNITUS RETRAINING THERAPY: "Studies show TRT is effective for about 60-80% of tinnitus sufferers within 6-12 months. While it may take some time to experience the full benefits, TRT remains one of the most effective options for treating tinnitus."

HEARING AIDS: "Approximately 60-80% of individuals with tinnitus experience symptom reduction when wearing properly programmed hearing aids. Some even experience 'residual inhibition,' where tinnitus perception remains reduced for a period after removing the hearing aids."

LENIRE TREATMENT: Clinical trials show impressive results: "70.5% of participants experienced clinically meaningful tinnitus reduction when sound therapy alone provided no meaningful reduction, 88.6% of treatment participants would recommend the device for tinnitus treatment, and 89.2% of patients saw benefit in as little as 12 weeks in real-world analysis."

In this 8 minute video Sara Mearns, principle dancer for the NYC Ballet, tells her story of hearing loss and the way it impacted her professionally, physically, mentally, and relationally.
