Special thanks to the 28 area youth who took part in our 2025 Safe Sitter® classes. Children entering sixth through eighth grade learned childcare safety during the classes held Aug. 18 & 22 at Tomah Health. Indianapolis pediatrician Dr. Patricia Keener developed the nationally recognized program after a colleague’s toddler choked to death while in the care of an adult sitter. More than 600,000 graduates have completed the course in hundreds of cities across the country. Our Tomah Health Community Outreach staff including Community Health Educator Whitney Sanjari and Professional Development Specialist Shayla Furlano shared information on how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies, plus first aid and rescue skills like choking rescue and CPR. The classes also highlighted childcare skills to manage behavior and the stages of child development, how to screen childcare jobs, discuss fees, and greet parents that will set students up for success. We’re working on our schedule for classes next summer.

Congratulations to Tomah Health leaders, Chelsea Harlan (Pulmonary Services Director), Dan Cole (Sterile Processing Coordinator - Surgical Services), Liz Johnson (Compliance/Risk Management Specialist) and Shawna Burke (Specialty Clinic Director) for being part of the 2025 Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative Leadership Residency graduating class. The program brings together new health care leaders to build successful leaders. Every other month for one-year, leaders attend highly interactive and enriching learning sessions, with practical skill-building topics that highlight critical thinking, decision making and prioritizing, being a visionary, in the moment leadership, defining what kind of leader a person wants to be, and personal and professional accountability. We’re proud of their growth and future aspirations in rural healthcare. Continued success!
