Waking up at 3 am? Or maybe you’re waking up drenched in sweat in the middle of the night and feeling unable to fall back asleep?

These are common experiences, but that doesn’t mean they’re not frustrating! As the time to your alarm creeps closer and your eyes remain wide open, you start getting desperate. What can you do?

Here are some things you can do when you’re awake at 3 am and can’t sleep:
Write down what you’re worried about.

- Read a book.
- Do a body scan meditation.
- Do some gentle stretching.
- Drink some tea, but avoid caffeine.
- Get out of bed.

If you constantly wake up in the middle of the night and don’t know why, read our latest blog article for answers. Your middle-of-the-night insomnia could be a sign of a deeper mental health issue.

Parallel Play begins around age 2 and is an important step in a child’s social development. Examples of Parallel Play include:

- Playing with blocks beside another child without directly interacting
- Coloring or drawing next to a peer at the same table
- Playing with toy cars or trains on separate tracks side-by-side

Children aren’t the only ones who can benefit from Parallel Play! Adults can engage in their work and hobbies while connecting with their social community through Parallel Play. In adults, Parallel Play could look like:

- Working on laptops side-by-side at a café without directly talking
- Doing separate hobbies (painting, knitting, gaming) in the same room
- Cooking different things in the kitchen at the same time without coordinating

Parallel Play can be especially important for neurodivergent adults. Learn more about it in our latest blog article.

Getting treatment for ADHD early helps children thrive later as adults. If you recognize these signs of ADHD in your child, get them tested for ADHD.

ADHD symptoms go far beyond just hyperactivity. Newer research shows that some people, girls especially, may show more signs of inattentive ADHD. Daydreaming, missing social cues, and having trouble following long instructions are all signs of ADHD, too. It is much more than restlessness and hyperactivity.

If you want to get your child (or yourself) tested for ADHD, contact Lifebulb Counseling. We have in-person and online therapists who can help.

Neurodivergence describes a brain that is different from the majority. It is a wide umbrella term that encompasses many mental health conditions, such as:

- ADHD
- Autism
- Down Syndrome
- Tourette Syndrome

And more. Defining neurodivergence has helped people understand that they are not broken or wrong, just different. For example, a neurodivergent person might:

- Learn differently
- Communicate differently
Understanding these differences can help neurodivergent people advocate for themselves, and neurotypical people understand their peers better.
- Have different environmental needs
- Have a brain that developed differently

Understanding these differences can help neurodivergent people advocate for themselves and neurotypical people understand their peers better.

Want an in-depth exploration of neurodivergence? Read our new blog article on the subject!

Are you drowning under a pile of to-dos, should-haves, and have-to-dos? When you only measure yourself by what you still have to get done, it’s easy to slide into despair.

Instead, try listing a few things that you’re proud of this month. What are the small or big accomplishments you’ve had this month? This week? Maybe even just this day?

These could be as big as asking for a raise or accomplishing a goal you’ve been working on. Or it could be as small as eating a healthy lunch or texting a friend back.

Having trouble thinking of something you’re proud of? That could be a sign of low self-esteem, which is a risk factor for mental health issues. Talk to a therapist about how they can help with negative thinking patterns.

Progress in therapy is incremental, with small changes building up over time. Because of this, it can be hard to tell if therapy is working or not. It’s not uncommon to get frustrated at your seemingly lack of progress.
“Is this even working?” you might ask your therapist.
Change won’t happen overnight. It might happen so slowly that you miss it. If therapy is working, you’ll notice some of these signs:

- You’re able to handle your triggers more easily.
- Your relationships are improving.
- Taking care of yourself is a little easier.
- You bounce back from setbacks.
- You feel more like yourself.
- You’re excited for the future.
- You’re going after what you want.

Don’t see those tell-tale signs of improvement? You might just need more time. Or, you could benefit from changing your therapist. “Breaking up” with your therapist might seem scary, but a good therapist will understand if they aren’t a good fit for you.

Talk to your therapist about your progress. And if you want to switch, Lifebulb Counseling can help. Just give our team a call.
