The Role of the MRO in Workplace Drug Testing

When it comes to drug and alcohol testing, accuracy and fairness are critical. That’s where the Medical Review Officer (MRO) comes in.

An MRO is a licensed physician responsible for:
✅ Reviewing all lab-based test results for accuracy
✅ Determining if there’s a valid medical explanation for positive results
✅ Protecting the confidentiality of employee medical information
✅ Providing employers with reliable, legally defensible results

With MRO oversight, employers can be confident that their testing program is accurate, compliant, and fair — protecting both the workplace and employees.

At HealthWorks-WNY, our team of MROs ensures every test result is handled with the highest level of professionalism.

⚠️ Safety Tip of the Week: Stretch It Out to Prevent Injuries! ⚠️

Muscle strains and sprains are some of the most common workplace injuries—especially in physically demanding jobs. One of the easiest ways to prevent them? Stretching!

🔹 Why stretch?
Stretching increases flexibility, improves blood flow, and helps prevent soft tissue injuries on the job.

🔹 When to stretch:
✅ Before starting a shift
✅ After long periods of sitting or standing
✅ Before lifting, bending, or repetitive motion tasks

🔹 Encourage movement:
Consider starting the day with a quick "stretch and flex" routine. It only takes a few minutes but can make a big difference!

Investing in a safer workplace starts with small, consistent habits. Let’s keep our teams healthy, mobile, and injury-free! 💪

Are you a school administrator, superintendent, or athletic trainer? Message us to learn more about HealthWorks-WNY's on-site student physical program.

More Information on Student Physicals:

The New York State Department of Education requires an annual physical examination for new entrants, and students in Grades K, 2, 4, 7 and 10. For students who do not have a private physician, HealthWorks-WNY can provide these physician services at your school in the fall and spring. New York State Education Law states that the physicals must be performed by a New York State Physician. Without a physical exam and the necessary paperwork, students cannot attend school.

Children in various grades participate in sports or physical education sponsored by the schools. For students who do not have a private physician, HealthWorks-WNY can provide the physical assessment to appropriately approve participation in such activities. Is your company enrolled in a hearing conservation program? If not, you may be required by OSHA to enroll as a manufacturer. More information below:

Baseline Audiogram:

Employers must provide baseline audiograms within 6 months of an employee's first exposure at or above an 8-hour TWA of 85 dB.

Annual Audiograms:

Employers must provide annual audiograms within 1 year of the baseline audiogram. It is important to test worker's hearing annually to identify deterioration in their hearing ability as early as possible. This enables employers to initiate protective follow-up measures before hearing loss progresses. Employers must compare annual audiograms to baseline audiograms to determine whether the audiogram is valid and whether the employee has lost hearing ability or experienced a standard threshold shift (STS).
