Town of Tonawanda Police Department Mourns the Loss of K9 Diehl

The Town of Tonawanda Police Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of K9 Diehl, beloved partner of Officer Ryan Taber. K9 Diehl faithfully served the department since September 10, 2018, and was an invaluable member of our K9 Unit.

A highly skilled German Shepherd, K9 Diehl’s training and expertise included tracking, agility, article search, building and open-area search, chase and apprehension, and handler protection. She was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and responded to countless tactical calls. Her presence was integral to operations involving containment and support for the department’s SWAT Team. Beyond her operational duties, K9 Diehl was also a proud ambassador of the department. She participated in numerous public demonstrations and regularly attended community events and school presentations, helping build trust between the police and the community we serve.

K9 Diehl was chosen for her physical ability, strength, intelligence, and strong temperament—traits essential for high-stress law enforcement situations. She was named in honor of the late Captain Thomas J. Diehl, who tragically passed away on April 10, 2017, leaving a legacy of dedication and service.

The Town of Tonawanda Police Department extends its deepest condolences to K9 Diehl’s partner, Officer Ryan Taber, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her. She will be remembered not only as a loyal and courageous K9 officer but also as a symbol of honor and commitment. Rest in peace, K9 Diehl. You served with strength and heart. You will not be forgotten.

Today, we take a moment to reflect on and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military. Their courage, dedication, and willingness to lay down their lives for our freedom and safety deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. As we remember them, let us also pledge to support their families and ensure that their legacy of service is never forgotten. The values they fought for—liberty, justice, and peace—continue to inspire us. May we carry their memory with us as we strive to uphold the ideals they defended.

The Town of Tonawanda Paramedics would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Retired Paramedic Supervisor Carla Bevilacqua. Supervisor Bevilacqua served the Town of Tonawanda and Village of Kenmore from May 1987 till her retirement in September 2013. In her retirement, she served for many years as a member of the James V. and Fay P. Ryan Paramedic Foundation, where her advocacy for the Paramedic unit continued. We cannot express enough gratitude for all that she did to make the Paramedic unit the success it is today. Rest in peace, thank you.

In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS professionals and the important work they do in our nation's communities. National Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's frontline. EMS Week is presented by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) in partnership with the National Associations of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). Together, NAEMT and ACEP lead annual EMS Week activities. These organizations are working to ensure that the important contributions of EMS professionals in safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of their communities are fully celebrated and recognized.

As EMS professionals, WE CARE. FOR EVERYONE. Our dedication and lifesaving skills are put to the test every day. We’re called to care in big cities and in small towns, in private homes, businesses, schools and on our nation's roadways.

Whether it’s saving a young victim of a motor vehicle crash, helping an elderly patient who’s forgotten to take her medication, stabilizing a construction worker experiencing chest pain on the jobsite, or treating an overdose on a city street, we’re trained and ready to deliver a range of medical interventions and support because WE CARE. FOR EVERYONE.

Our roles and responsibilities are growing and changing and we’re rising to the challenge. From community paramedicine to preventive healthcare, we’re tasked with providing next-level patient navigation and care in new surroundings, using new technologies. We’re there for our community, whenever and wherever they need us. Because WE CARE. FOR EVERYONE.
