Did you know that our corneas have 5 layers?
💁🏻♀️ Epithelium - The outermost, five-to-seven-cell thick layer that acts as a barrier to foreign matter.
💁🏻♀️ Bowman's Layer - A thin, tough, collagenous layer that provides structural support.
💁🏻♀️ Stroma - The thickest layer, composed mainly of water and collagen, which gives the cornea its strength and helps to focus light.
💁🏻♀️ Descemet's Membrane - A thin, strong, self-repairing layer that protects the interior of the eye from infection and trauma.
💁🏻♀️ Endothelium - The innermost layer, responsible for pumping excess fluid out of the stroma to maintain corneal transparency.
Here are a few more fun facts ⬇
The cornea bends light, providing about 65-75% of the eye's total focusing power. It also serves as a protective barrier against dust, bacteria, and other foreign objects. Our corneas filters out some of the sun's damaging ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths, protecting the inner eye structures. Pretty cool, huh? 😎
