"If I know I'm pregnant, why do I need an ultrasound?"

An ultrasound can let you know where your pregnancy is located. If your pregnancy is outside the uterus, that is a potentially life-threatening condition (ectopic pregnancy), and an ultrasound can rule that out. If your pregnancy is viable and inside your uterus, an ultrasound can also help you learn exactly how far along you are in your pregnancy.
