Whooping cough is no joke in infants/newborns. I have sat bedside of a newborn with pertussis. We didn’t have an ICU bed available, so as a resident- I had to sit bedside and be ready to intubate if he got worse. I can’t think of a scarier hour of my life. He would go into that staccato cough and turn a gray color. The whole time I’m staring at him willing him to stop and take a breath.
This is how it is with many of the deadly vaccine preventable illnesses. But many of us pediatricians have not seen a lot of these diseases, thanks to the success of our vaccines. As the public knowledge of them fades, then the doubt and skepticism sets in, well do we really NEED this vaccine?
I don’t know how to get this point across to the skeptics. I honestly believe that at this point, people have their minds made up one way or another. The families that are just vaccine hesitant with whom we can have good conversations, ask great questions, and listen to the science give us hope.
Please continue to trust your favorite pediatrician. Ask questions, listen to their expertise and science driven knowledge. We are in this profession because we love kids and want what’s best for them. That’s it. That’s all I got.
