IAFF Local 83 Topeka Professional Firefighters

Sunday at approximately 11:30 a.m., one of our off-duty firefighters Greg DeGreeff took immediate action to assist a neighbor after being alerted by his son to smoke coming from a nearby home.

Upon checking the residence, he found a working garage fire with an elderly woman still inside. With conditions rapidly worsening due to heavy smoke and heat, he entered the home, located her in a bedroom, and safely brought her outside.

Mehlville Fire Protection District crews arrived shortly after and were able to contain the fire to the home. Due to the intense heat, several neighboring houses sustained damage including the DeGreeff residence. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

While the home was unfortunately a total loss, the quick thinking and selfless actions of firefighter DeGreeff, made a critical difference yesterday. His willingness to act without hesitation reflects the dedication and commitment shared by our members, both on and off duty.

The city's human resources department presented plans to improve outcomes, including more accountability and adding new support positions to help employees navigate the process.

Members of the executive board, and other active members attended the first ever for Excellence conference to continue to grow and learn as leaders on how to most effectively advocate for and represent our members. Great information was absorbed as well as great networking connections were made. It was an awesome experience to listen to keynote speaker Gen. Joseph Dunford who was the 19th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff speak on leadership.

It was another year of supporting boys and girls basketball at Quincy Elementary School and another successful pre-season scrimmage! These kiddos are good, and we wish them luck in their season!
