Our CHO, Dr. Veronica Hooper, met with U.S. Senator Patty Murray to discuss the effects that proposed federal budget cuts to Medicaid, rural health programs, and more will have on the healthcare system in Washington State.

"We know what happens when access declines,” said Dr. Veronica Hooper. “We've seen this over and over, especially with primary care. Emergency visits rise, healthcare costs escalate beyond measurable amounts, and we see increased hospitalizations for preventable causes.”

We are very happy to have had Dr. Hooper share exactly what the effects of the proposed budget cuts will look like as they impact our rural communities' health. We look forward to helping Senator Murray bring these concerns back to D.C. as Congress prepares for upcoming federal budget negotiations.

“I quickly realized how difficult it could be to balance school with full-time work. That’s what makes the YVFWC Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program so impactful—it removed those barriers for me.”

Brianna Madrigal Cruz began her career at Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic working behind the scenes. Today, she’s caring for patients as a Certified Medical Assistant, thanks to our Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program, offered in partnership with InReach Career Pathways, a division of the Washington Association for Community Health.

This paid, full-time apprenticeship allows employees to earn while they learn, ultimately providing a clear, supported pathway into healthcare without sacrificing financial stability. This program goes beyond training by investing in our employees, strengthening our healthcare workforce, and creating sustainable career pathways that benefit employees and patients.

The Northwest Community Action Center is helping families stay comfortable year-round and save on energy costs through the Home Rehabilitation Grant Program. This funding allows NCAC teams to seal drafts, improve insulation, and install air circulation fans in low-income homes across Klickitat and Skamania Counties, as well as the Wapato and Mabton communities. Help us spread the word so more families can enjoy safer, more energy‑efficient homes every season!
