I would like to address some ongoing posts and comments from Topsham residents I've recently read.
1. My (Sallie) other business, Alternative Correctional Healthcare, is in no way in conjunction with Elm Street Assisted Living. ACH provides medical and mental health care to currently incarcerated individuals. These are two separate business entities providing separate services with separate staff and clients.
2. As a human being with empathy and a drive to care for vulnerable and under served populations, I believe as individuals age and are unable to care for themselves, they all deserve a chance to have a home, feel like a part of their community and be around caring people for their last years on earth. I believe in forgiveness and compassion.
3. I do not turn away residents with a need for placement who have addiction issues, mental health issues or a history of criminal records. No one who lives in our facility is a danger to anyone else and everyone there qualifies for assisted living level services.
4. The residents we have are kind, elderly and just wish to live out the remainder of their lives cared for. We are a business who provides long term care services and we do not discriminate. I don't believe anyone ever really wants to have to go to an assisted living but it's unfortunately a choice many need to make.
It is unfortunate more individuals do not feel the way I do. We are in not only a housing crisis here in Maine but our elderly population is also suffering with inability to find placement in nursing facilities. I do hope the residents of Topsham, our neighbors and others, can find a way to be more inclusive and caring. There is currently so much hate and unfortunately, these same people are the reason we don't have enough rehabs or homeless shelters or other places for our vulnerable community members to recieve assistance. Quite frankly- I am sick of the "help these people, but not in my neighborhood" attitude.
If anyone has questions or concerns, please reach out to me.
