Have you been asked by your primary doctor for symptoms of anxiety when you go to your physical? And if they do, are you often confused weather you should say yes or no because you don’t really know if what you feel is “normal”?
To start, most of physicians don’t ask those questions because they have detached the relationship between body mind. And therefore, the other symptoms you are inquiring for are not connected by how you feel. And that is a HUGE mistake in our society and in the medical school training. It is all connected. Trauma has a biology. Trauma, fear, anxiety, are not in the event, but are perceived and interpreted by the body and then makes a rational meaning in the mind. So it should be taken in consideration when doing a treatment plan.
On the other hand, sometimes people are confused about whether they are experiencing anxiety or any other nervous system dysregulated symptom. People think that because they are active, or practice, yoga, or another practices, that should be enough to be fulfilled. But the reality is that until we don’t understand the biology of the trauma and the stress response, we won’t be able to Make a conscious change in the body mind. That means, to understand what is a disorganized attachment, what is the stress response, what is trauma response, and then how can we can learn tools to regulate the nervous system.
Client question: “ So by self regulating the nervous system means that I will never feel anxiety or stress anymore?”
Me: “ no, triggers are often surrounded us. The goal is not to stop feeling, the goal is to befriend the emotional system, to be OK with emerging emotions, and to learn how to bring us back to a window of tolerance, which is the place where we can tolerate the feelings without being overwhelmed.
Self regulation in the key to a enjoyable life with its challenges.
