Sorry I can’t ’Just Let Them’ when it comes to my job.
This is my pet peeve. When somebody tells me they are going to do something, I expect them to do it. My job as a coach is to hold people accountable. As a health coach when somebody tells me their goals, and we set up the ‘plan of attack’ and a timeline, my job is to make sure that happens for them. Sending little reminders, weekly sign-ins to do check-offs on the goals that they have set, etc. I hold them accountable.
So when I have a friend…someone who has not hired me…tells me that they are going to lose weight, stop smoking, stop drinking, start exercising, change a personality trait, I expect them to do it. My husband says I have very high expectations of my clients AND my friends. Basically, if you say you’re going to do something, I expect you to do it. This works really well as a health coach, not so much as a friend 😳. I am working on the ‘Just Let Them’ theory with my friends. Although as a health coach, it’s more like ‘Don’t Let Them’. With my friends the problem is when they tell me things they’re going to do it is very hard for me to ‘just let them’ not follow through, and to watch them fail. But that’s what makes a health coach so important. Someone to hold you accountable to remind you what you said you were going to do, and to help you stay on track. Just know that if you hire me as your health coach I’ll expect you to do what you say you’re going to do and ‘Don’t Let You’ fail. And as a friend, just know that I’m working on ‘just letting you’. 👊🏼
