Each month, we encourage employees to recognize their colleagues for their exemplary efforts in helping GBMC achieve better health, better care, least waste, and more joy.

Please join us in celebrating Darius Byrd, Security Officer II, who was recognized by Renaira McBrown for his compassion, professionalism, and steady presence.

While working on the Labor and Delivery Unit, Darius encountered a visitor who was visibly distressed. With patience and calm, he helped her feel grounded in a moment of high emotion. Thanks to his support, she was able to regain her composure and later returned with joy to thank him—sharing a photo of her new grandson and heartfelt appreciation.

💚 Darius’s empathy and presence not only supported a visitor through a vulnerable moment but also inspired those around him. His actions truly reflect better care and the human side of healthcare.

Thank you, Darius, for showing what it means to care deeply and lead by example at GBMC!

✨ Jerry’s Auto Group has shown a remarkable commitment to the Baltimore community—support that extends far beyond the showroom. Since first sponsoring GBMC’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes in 2015, Jerry’s has continually strengthened its partnership with the SAFE & DV Program, which provides critical care for survivors of s*xual assault and domestic violence.

In 2022, Jerry’s named the SAFE & DV Program the beneficiary of its Annual Golf Classic, raising essential funds to sustain and grow these life-saving services. Owner James Stautberg and his family have further amplified this impact through generous personal matching gifts each year.

Through the leadership and compassion of the Stautberg family and the entire Jerry’s Auto Group team, survivors across our community continue to receive hope, healing, and safety. 💚

✨ Lt. Governor Aruna Miller is Maryland’s second woman, and the first woman of color and immigrant, elected to statewide office. As co-chair of the Governor’s Family Violence Council, she is helping strengthen coordination of survivor services and policy across state agencies.

As part of the Moore–Miller agenda, she has championed reproductive health protections, survivor-centered care, and key investments supporting SAFE programs statewide. In 2023–24, she and First Lady Dawn Moore visited GBMC’s SAFE & DV Unit, highlighting budget commitments such as $3.5M for the R**e Kit Testing Grant Fund, which expands access to forensic exams for survivors across Maryland.

With experience on Maryland’s Sexual Assault Evidence Kit Policy & Funding Committee, Lt. Governor Miller continues to elevate domestic- and s*xual-violence prevention while leading statewide work in mental health, overdose response, transportation, and life sciences.

Her leadership strengthens Maryland’s commitment to safety, justice, and survivor-focused care. 💚

✨ Speaker Adrienne Jones is a trailblazer—the first woman and first African American to serve as Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. Since 2019, she has been a driving force behind strengthening Maryland’s response to s*xual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking.

Under her leadership, the House has passed major survivor-centered reforms, including a 2024 law creating a statewide funding stream for domestic violence programs and HB758, which improves s*xual assault evidence kit preservation and chain-of-custody practices. These changes have significantly strengthened SAFE and SART efforts across Maryland.

A lifelong Baltimore County leader, Speaker Jones has built bipartisan support for trauma-informed policing, expanded victim services, and championed a constitutional amendment protecting reproductive freedom. Her decades of public service reflect a steadfast commitment to safety, justice, and the well-being of Maryland families. 💚

✨ The Honorable Shelly L. Hettleman is one of Maryland’s most influential voices on s*xual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Representing Baltimore County, she has authored and championed landmark laws that protect survivors and strengthen accountability statewide.

Outraged by inconsistent and harmful handling of r**e kits, she led major reforms to standardize evidence testing, create the R**e Kit Testing Grant Fund, and end the use of “victim waivers” in s*xual assault cases. Her 2023 legislation extended r**e kit retention to 75 years and legally recognized GBMC’s historic microscope-slide evidence—opening the door to testing thousands of old cases.

Senator Hettleman also championed the 2024 law creating a statewide certification and grant fund for domestic violence programs and strongly supports Safe Harbor protections for trafficked youth. She works closely with survivors, advocates, and law enforcement to build bipartisan policy solutions.

Her leadership has helped create a safer, more just Maryland for survivors of abuse. 💚
