Safe sleep is super important! Always remember to put your babies to sleep Alone, on their Back and in a Crib or bassinet.

A fear for many parents during the first year of their baby’s life is sudden infant death syndrome, commonly known as . Dr. Gaurav Kumar, a pediatrician, recently shared important information relating to SIDS. https://bit.ly/3ORqNeU

We are living in 2 communities now (great article from Seattle: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/health/the-two-societies-97-of-new-covid-cases-are-among-people-who-havent-gotten-the-shots/). One vaccinated and one not. The is truly remarkable. The "real life" effectiveness in preventing hospitalization is 97%. This puts it up there with H Flu and measles for being incredibly effective. Those who are vaccinated can gather without masks, resume pre-pandemic activities, and not worry about becoming severely ill from a truly horrific disease. The risks of the vaccine are minuscule compared to the risk of the disease. For example, the risk of heart inflammation after vaccine is 1:50,000 at the highest (aappublications.org/news/2021/06/04/covid-vaccine-myocarditis-case-reports-060421), while the risk of heart inflammation from the disease in the same young adult from the population is as high as 1:50 (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamacardiology/fullarticle/2780548), even with asymptomatic disease.
If you are worried about vaccine safety, we should all be reassured that we have systems in place to even DETECT a 1:50,000 event and hundreds of millions of people have been vaccinated. There are no other concerning safety signals apart from the previously reported clotting from the J and J and AZ vaccines (which are still rare and way lower than from the disease).
As you can see, in Maryland our case numbers, hospitalizations, etc are at an all time low. This is primarily due to vaccines, but also probably some effect of the season. If we do not continue to increase our vaccination rate, we will likely see a post-July 4 and fall outbreak again. There is NO reason for anyone to be part of that outbreak. If you haven't been vaccinated yet, now is the time - no lines, plenty of access, no cost. Keep it going!

To parents of college students everywhere: Are you ready for the upcoming potential Super-spreader event of the year? Do you have a plan?
Both Drs. Fauci and Birx have warned colleges to have a plan for Thanksgiving, but given how poorly many colleges have handled the fall, I am guessing that not many will actually adhere to a rational testing/isolation plan prior to dismissal.
Here is the scenario:
1. We are 2 weeks away from millions of college students crisscrossing the country to come home.
2. Many students will be coming from communities with high incidence rates of - check in the first comment for community and college rates.
3. Many students will attend high risk gatherings prior to leaving.
4. When students return home, they will want to attend high risk gatherings with their friends from high school.
5. Many Thanksgiving get-togethers will include grandparents and other high risk individuals.
This is a recipe for disaster. But what can you do as a parent?
1. If you are planning a gathering make sure your college student understands that they need to quarantine NOW and not engage in risky gatherings prior to coming home.
2. Encourage your student to always wear a mask.
3. Find out if your college has a testing/depart policy (Notre Dame came up with one right after the football field storming Saturday night)
4. Consider isolating your young adult when they get home (good luck with that).
5. Make sure they safely gather with HS friends (outside, wearing masks).
6. Communicate. Young adults are smart, they have been living through a difficult time. You cannot treat them like toddlers. Work out a plan to keep them, your family, and your community safe. Good luck.

There seems to be a lot of Potty Training Regression going on these days...this pandemic is stressful for everyone! Here's an article from Romper with contributions by Dr. Hemm.

Finally using the toilet is such a huge childhood milestone, that your kiddo having accidents post-potty training can make you feel like a giant failure. As disheartening as it is, plenty of parents (myself included) have been there. The reasons for…

New shipment!!!

We just got a shipment of brand-new books to hand out at all the check-ups from 6 months to 5 years!! (Dr. Hemm is super excited because she made sure to order some her own kids’ (and her own) favorites! Look for them at your next check-up.

Our office is a REACH OUT AND READ site.
That means a couple of things about our practice:

1. We give every child a brand-new book at all check-ups, from ages 6 months to 5 years. We are able to pay for these with grants and donations.

2. We have tons of used books for all ages (including parents) in our office that are free to be taken home at any type of appointment. One of our favorite things to be asked by a child at the end of a visit is not just for a sticker but…”Can I choose a book now?”

3. We used to feature a variety of books in our waiting room but we haven’t been able to do that since COVID. We still have the books and are handing them out, paying special attention to Infection control.

4. We are always looking for additional used books that we can pass on. Dr. Hemm used to be a frequent visitor to The Book Thing in Baltimore before they had to temporally close and her Girl Scout Troop collects books for the office. Patient families also bring us ones they have outgrown.
