Our Story
We are two good friends that share a passion for helping others. Emma is a public health researcher and Sharon is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. We wrote Beyond The Egg Timer: A Companion Guide for Having Babies in Your Mid-Thirties and Older. It is available on our website: Beyondtheeggtimer.com.
We were talking one night about all of the misconceptions around having children when you are older such as a "fertility cliff" or the prevalence of miscarriage and birth defects. We were alarmed by the shaming campaigns targeted at professional women about delaying childbearing. We decided to take action and write a book.
BTET explores when, whether, and how to have a baby over 35. It contains narratives of women with divergent experiences--some conceive very easily, others require intervention, a clear explanation of the statistics (they are not as bad as you think), and practical coping advice. This is not a "how to get pregnant book" nor is it an infertility book. We hope this book will empower and inspire you along your journey. We hope that the narratives and factual information help you form your own decisions and timeline. This is not an advice book; we offer other women’s stories so you know that you are not alone and that there is always hope. We dispel myths about “advanced maternal age” so you can make clear, un-pressured decisions. We have included some coping techniques that are universally considered helpful in navigating the emotions that naturally accompany life’s challenges. The section on “pregtiquette” will help you through some sticky situations. Lastly, we offer you views from some major world religions about why some conceive easily and others don't as that may be important to you.
We blog at Beyondtheeggtimer.com and on Psychology Today at http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/beyond-the-egg-timer and also tweet @beyondeggtimer. Our book is available through our website (free shipping in the continental US!) and Amazon, Smashwords, and other book sellers.
