Pregnancy comes with many ups (why yes, this is my second dinner, TYVM) and downs (unsolicited belly touches—pls no). The same can be said for knowing how to have safe s*x while pregnant—everyone’s different and you might not know what to expect. But fear not, these pregnancy s*x positions can help you navigate all the hormonal waves you’re riding.
The good news: Amazing pregnancy s*x is absolutely possible if you pay attention to your body, talk to your doctor, and stay true to what feels good. You might be feeling hornier than ever! In most cases, there’s no need to suppress that because you’re expecting.
“Pregnancy causes an increase in vaginal secretions, breast sensitivity, and increased blood flow in the pelvic region,” says director of perinatal services at NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln, Kecia Gaither, MD, MPH, FACOG, double board-certified in ob-gyn and maternal fetal medicine. All this can lead to a huge surge in desire.
But some folks experience the complete opposite, which, hi, is also totally normal. “Your libido may go MIA in pregnancy because the biological drive to have s*x is not there. This is a good time to drop goal-oriented s*x and simply focus on your pleasure, enjoyment and building closeness,” says ob-gyn Renée Hilliard, MD, a s*x and relationship coach.
