The subject of the history of modern embalming is a fascinating one. The many inventions, fluid compounds, rituals and customs that were developed in the Victorian era and have led to today's practices are something to be studied and remembered. The history in question can be an object lesson in the importance of viewing the body, the great lengths sought to achieve the required preservation, and that art taken for granted by many today.

Here is a terrific writing detailing the death of General Grant, his funeral arrangements, embalming, challenges faced by our predecessors in this undertaking, and perceptions of the public.

The Ohio Embalmer's Association once again put on a very informative seminar in Cleveland. It is always a pleasure to mingle with like-minded professionals. gave a terrific presentation on the importance of viewing the body, the history of restorative art in embalming and science based logic, dispelling the common misconceptions and myths of the use of formaldehyde. Well done, all!
Michigan was well represented!

We had our licensing inspection to comply with the new laws in the state of Michigan. There has been some confusion about who these laws actually apply to. Funeral homes are regulated by Article 18 of the Michigan code; independent third party transport services and refrigeration facilities are now regulated by the new Article 18A. Therefore, this does not apply to funeral homes. However, funeral homes, when hiring independent transport companies should verify that they are in compliance with 18A.

Woman as Embalmers

In light of women's history month and National Funeral Directors Day, I thought it a good time to share this with all of you.

In 1906, Mrs. White was asked about the role of women embalmers, her answer recorded in AJ Dodge embalming text of the time. I'll omit any attempt to paraphrase as her brevity captures what she is saying better than I can summarize.

However, a secondary question is asked and answered; a question that still has legs today in various social media and water cooler discussions. Are we a profession? What criteria are necessary to be considered such? Have we met Mrs. White's litmus test of what would qualify funeral service as a professional endeavor? Is the way still being "jealousy guarded"? If the opportunity presented itself, would you assure Mrs. White that "we've made it", or "we still have a lot of work to do? Has the issue become different than women as embalmers; meaning, have larger problems presented themselves?

I'm very curious to hear what everyone has to say.

In the meantime, Happy Morticians Day!

This antique glass jar was once used for embalming.

At one time, it was common for embalming to be performed at the home of the deceased or in some other remote location. Jars such as this were used to create a vacuum chamber to withdraw fluids from the body, or to create pressure and administer preservative fluids to the body. Undertakers would show up with traveling embalming grips to practice our ancient craft.

I decided to post this today because I noticed for the first time, the barely visible words molded into the glass read, "Dazey Churn No. 40". A quick Google search confirmed that these jars were originally developed and intended to churn butter.

As with most instruments and apparatuses used in embalming, this too was incorporated from a completely different industry with a completely different purpose.
