We are heartbroken by the shocking acts of gun violence that occurred yesterday, which reverberate through our communities and are witnessed by children – in more ways than we often realize.

On September 11th, which happened 24 years ago today, we learned how repeated footage of tragedy affects children. On 9/11, children couldn’t escape the TV footage of planes crashing and buildings falling. Now, graphic videos of shootings circulate on social media, exposing kids to violence they aren’t ready to see. Children shouldn’t carry the weight of the world’s tragedies on their screens.

Parenting through these moments is scary and overwhelming, but parents can help support children by checking in, limiting exposure, and offering comfort and safety. And as pediatricians, AAP remains deeply committed to advocating for gun violence prevention and its lasting impact on young people.

Upcoming family-friendly afternoon event in support of homeless cats and kittens in our area!

Join TC Paw Cat Rescue and our cat-loving community on Saturday, September 6th at Buttercup Farm in Traverse City for an afternoon of barnyard charm, lawn games, live music, and a celebration of the often-unsung heroes of rural life: barn cats!

🐱 What: TC Paw’s Annual Herding of the Cats
📍 Where: Buttercup Farm, 683 N. Rusch Rd., Traverse City
🕒 When: Saturday, September 6, 3–7 PM
🎟️ Tickets: $25 donation – includes a meal, drinks, and a whole lot of kitty love.

Go to TCPaw.org to purchase tickets for the whole family!

WHY: Part of the TC Paw Cat Rescue mission is to reduce the number of homeless, neglected, and unwanted cats in our community. Spaying and neutering play a vital role in this effort because:

Prevent Overpopulation: Cats reproduce rapidly, and without intervention, one unspayed or unneutered cat can lead to dozens of kittens in just a few years. Many of these kittens end up homeless, in shelters, or worse. By spaying/neutering, we directly reduce the number of unwanted litters.

Reduce Euthanasia Rates: Animal shelters often face overcrowding, leading to heartbreaking decisions about euthanasia. Fewer unwanted kittens mean fewer cats in shelters and, ultimately, fewer lives lost.

Improve Cat Health: Spaying and neutering can prevent certain cancers and diseases, leading to healthier, longer lives for cats.

Decrease Problem Behaviors: Neutered cats are less likely to roam, spray, or display aggression, which can improve their quality of life and reduce the chance of abandonment.
