"For me, it's always been about simply taking care of others. It's the reason I became a nurse, and the reason I stay true to the promise I made during my nurse pinning ceremony in 2007.

Being a caregiver gives me purpose and the greatest feeling of self-worth. I love knowing that as a team, we can make a difference and encourage our patients to have a positive outlook and safe outcome. And the best part is that I get to do this right in my hometown! It's such a blessing to take care of our own families here in Charlevoix.

I am so honored to continue to share my passion for nursing and compassion for others, and work alongside some wonderful people, as we come together to meet one common goal. What a humbling and rewarding career it has been!" —Rachel S., RN, Outpatient Surgery, Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital

Oncologist Yelena Kier, DO, has devoted over a decade to caring for cancer patients—including a free pilot program she launched last fall called IGNITE to help empower breast cancer survivors after chemotherapy.

What started as a group of 12 women has now grown into a thriving 12-week program that runs every three months, supporting survivors of all types of cancer through education and resources.

“Life after chemo doesn’t go back to the way it was before. You are living this other life—one you didn’t want to lead—and we as a medical community need do better to recognize those challenges and educate on ways to move forward,” says Dr. Kier, who practices at Cowell Family Cancer Center in Traverse City.

In recognition of her extraordinary dedication to advancing cancer care, Dr. Kier was recently named an Advocacy Champion by The Association for Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

“Being an active member of the local, state, and national Hematology/Oncology community has allowed me to speak widely and loudly on behalf of patients in Northern Michigan,” shared Dr. Kier. “We, as a community, will continue to fight for increased access to care, drug affordability, and continued research on behalf of all patients and caregivers impacted by hematologic and oncologic disease.”

Future Physicians Meet Their Match at Munson’s Resident Mixer!

Munson Healthcare recently hosted its annual Resident Mixer, a vibrant event connecting residents from the Munson Family Medicine Residency Program with practices across Northern Michigan. This gathering isn’t just about networking — it’s about building the future of primary care in our communities.

In 2025, four of six Munson Family Medicine Residency Program graduates chose to stay and serve right here in Northern Michigan — in Kalkaska, Ga***rd, and Grayling!

Current resident Dr. Rebekah Weeks (Class of 2028) shared: “As a medical student rotating at Munson Medical Center, I’ve learned from providers in several of our Northern Michigan communities. Now, as a Family Medicine Resident, I was delighted to attend the annual Resident Mixer and reconnect with some familiar faces. This is such a supportive community, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to train here.”

Past resident Dr. Ben Vanos (Class of 2020) added: “Since my intern year at Munson Family Practice Center, the annual Resident Mixer has always been an exciting event to attend. This event helped me connect with the opportunity to practice in Indian River. I’m honored to return each fall to network with the bright, new doctors and showcase the great opportunities we have for our graduates in our Northern Michigan communities.”

Here's to meaningful connections, bright futures, and stronger communities!

Collaborating for Community Health

Last week, Munson Healthcare leaders participated in Traverse Connect's Economic Strategy Session alongside partners from the Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center and Goodwill Northern Michigan.

Collaboration is essential to advancing community health, especially in mental health, economic security, and access to care, priority areas of focus as identified in the 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment.

Thanks to all who joined the discussion and Q&A on how these issues affect our workforce across industries and shape the local economy. Together, we’re building a healthier, more resilient region. 💙

Pinked Out with Purpose: Thank You, Manistee!

What a weekend! Manistee showed up and showed out for Paint the Town Pink 2025. From the first-ever Run the Town Pink 5K to the moving Remembrance Walk and the empowering Beyond the Ribbon women’s night, this town was buzzing with energy, heart, and a whole lot of pink.

Together, we honored those affected by cancer and raised support for the Cancer Patient Needs Fund, all while continuing a tradition that’s helped bring life-changing breast health services to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital.

We’re proud. We’re grateful. And we’re already dreaming bigger for next year. Let’s keep painting the town pink!
