PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY: No-Body Contact Recommendation for Portions of West Grand Traverse Bay and Connected Waterways.

In response, and out of an abundance of caution, the Grand Traverse County Health Department has issued a no-body contact advisory for surface waters in the following areas:

Affected Areas:
-Kids Creek: From the 6th Street bridge to the confluence with the Boardman River near Wadsworth Street
-Boardman/Ottaway River: From Wadsworth Street to the mouth of West Grand Traverse Bay

The Grand Traverse County Health Department (GTCHD) has confirmed a measles outbreak as of June 24, 2025.

Thus far, all the confirmed cases in GT county have been linked to one another by the GTCHD but this is a highly contagious disease that spreads through the air. Anyone who is not immune to measles is at risk. Measles symptoms can appear 1-3 weeks AFTER exposure.

Common signs and symptoms include:
- high fever (102-105F)
- cough, runny nose
- red, watery eyes
- tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums and roof of mouth
- multiple raised red bumps THAT ALWAYS STARTS ON THE FOREHEAD then spreads downward to the trunk, arms and legs. This rash appears 3-5 days after the other signs/symptoms and fade in the way it came (face will clear before the rest of the body)

Testing for measles requires samples from the urine, blood and throat. As such, Munson Medical Center has a dedicated space for testing those individuals. If you have been exposed or suspect your child has measles, please call the office to schedule a telemedicine visit with a provider as the first step.

PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE IF YOUR CHILD IS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 6 MONTHS AND 4 YEARS OF AGE, as he or she will most likely will be due for an expedited dose of the MMR vaccine. It takes up to 2 weeks for the body to form full immunity after receiving the vaccine.

For more information, please go to the GTCHD website or call our office with more questions.

New data from the CDC shows an increase in children with autism spectrum disorder. The numbers are increasing because of better and earlier screening, identification and access to autism evaluations. This is encouraging because when children are identified early, appropriate supports and services can be better tailored to their needs. Pediatricians want all children to thrive, including autistic children, and they are here to help families navigate screenings and diagnoses. Autistic children demonstrate behaviors that are different from some of their peers, but they are children who deserve love and belonging like all children.
