❄️ Wellness Center Wednesday: Staying Safe in the Sub-Zero Chill ❄️
Northern Michigan is currently in the grip of a frigid weather pattern, and with even colder temperatures forecasted for this weekend, our team at the Grand Traverse Pavilions Outpatient Wellness Center wants to ensure our community stays safe and warm!

When the windchill drops below zero, the risk of frostbite and hypothermia increases significantly—especially for older adults. If you must head out, follow these top 4 tips to stay protected:

1. Layer up
Don't just wear one heavy coat. Layering is much more effective at trapping body heat:
• Base Layer: Moisture-wicking fabric (like thermal polyester or wool) to keep skin dry.
• Middle Layer: Fleece or wool to provide insulation.
• Outer Layer: A wind-resistant and waterproof coat to block the biting wind.
2. Protect Your Skin
In sub-zero windchills, exposed skin can see damage in minutes. Wear a hat that covers your ears, a scarf to protect your lungs from cold air, and mittens instead of gloves (fingers stay warmer when they touch each other!). A balaclava or face covering can also be very helpful.
3. Watch for "Invisible" Ice
Cold snaps often mean "black ice" on sidewalks and parking lots. Wear boots with non-slip rubber soles and take "penguin steps” to reduce risk for slips.
4. Know When to Stay In

With temperatures expected to drop further this weekend, the best way to stay safe is to limit outdoor exposure entirely. Consider indoor exercise options like going to the gym, walking at all the mall, or enjoying the 92-degree therapy pool at the Wellness Center as alternatives to outdoor activity.

Stay safe and warm, Traverse City! If you have questions about maintaining your activity levels indoors during the winter months, our Wellness Center team is here to help: (231) 932-3172 https://www.gtpavilions.org/the-wellness-center/outpatient-therapy/

❄️ Happy Wellness Center Wednesday from Grand Traverse Pavilions! ❄️

It’s officially a Snow Day here in Traverse City! While the freshly fallen snow looks like a winter wonderland, we know it also brings some tricky, icy conditions to our sidewalks and driveways.

Whether you’re heading out to clear the porch or just taking a breath of fresh winter air, our team at the Wellness Center wants to make sure you stay upright and injury-free.

Here are 4 tips for safely navigating the ice today:
1. Walk Like a Penguin 🐧 To keep your center of gravity over your front leg, bend your knees slightly and take short, shuffling steps. Point your toes out slightly—it may look funny, but it’s the safest way to avoid a slip!
2. Hands Out, Not in Pockets 👐 It’s tempting to tuck your hands away to keep them warm, but keeping your arms out at your sides helps you maintain balance. If you do slip, having your hands free can help you steady yourself.
3. Choose the Right Traction 🥾 Wear boots with heavy treads or consider slipping on a pair of ice cleats (like YakTrax). If you use a cane or walker, make sure the rubber tips are in good condition or use an ice-piercing attachment.
4. Stick to the "Salty" Path 🧂 Whenever possible, stick to surfaces that have been clearly sanded or salted. Avoid "shortcuts" through the snow, as they often hide patches of black ice.

If the ice has you feeling a bit unsteady on your feet this season, our Wellness Center therapists are here to help with balance training and fall prevention. Give us a call at (231) 932-3172 to learn more about our outpatient therapy and wellness programs.

Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the snow day! ☕❄️
