I started Monarch Physical Therapy and Coaching to do PT in a different way. A way that puts you first. Where you will spend the full hour with your physical therapist. I am there to answer all of your questions, make corrections to all of your exercises, and guide you every step of the way. There’s no “who is this new person” or “is this an intern??” here. You might’ve heard of your pelvic floor, and you’ve almost certainly heard of your core - the muscles that make up your “six pack”. Did you know that these two important muscle groups work together to support your body during every single activity in your day-to-day life? When they’re in sync, your body is strong and able to anything you need from it. When they aren’t working together well, it could cause issues.

Signs your pelvic floor and core aren’t working together as well as they should be:
- urinary leakage
- sensation of heaviness or a “bubble” feeling low in your pelvis
- pain with in*******se or tampon insertion
- chronic low back or hip pain
- stomach pushing out or “coning” when doing core exercises

Have you heard of scar massage? This is a powerful tool you can use to restore mobility between fascial layers. This can be done anytime there is a scar, but surgical scars are most common as they go through many layers. This is an important part of recovery for any orthopedic surgery, but it can also be done postpartum!

After a vaginal delivery, there can be tearing and healing of the perineum. Scarring in this area can cause pain with s*x, difficulty with urination, and painful bowel movements. With a cesarean delivery, there is even more scarring through many layers of skin, muscle, and uterus. Even though it seems like a scar on your abdomen can’t affect pelvic floor function, scar tissue from a c—section scar can cause many of the same issues as a perineal scar!

Scar massage can be done early postpartum for some people, but is generally safe for everyone at 8 weeks postpartum. It can be beneficial even many years after delivery.

To perform scar massage: use gentle circular, vertical, or horizontal movements on and around your scar. Start with 3-5 minutes 2-3 days a week. If there is lingering pain or burning, reduce the intensity during the following session.

Are you limiting your water intake to manage your urinary leakage or frequency?? That may actually be increasing your symptoms of urgency! Limiting fluid intake causes your urine to irritate your bladder, leading to urgency and frequency of urination. The acidic urine can make it feel like you need to go more often. Dehydration can also set you up for infections.

Stay hydrated and drink water consistently throughout the day!

💛 March is Endometriosis Awareness Month 💛

Did you know that 1 in 10 women of reproductive age live with endometriosis? Despite how common it is, the average time to diagnosis is 4 to 12 years because symptoms are often misunderstood, dismissed, or normalized as just "bad periods".

At Monarch Physical Therapy, we want to help break the silence and normalize talking about pelvic health. Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation, pain, and scar tissue.

Signs & Symptoms to Watch For:
💥 Severe Period Pain: Pain that disrupts daily life, requires medication, or keeps you in bed.
🩸 Heavy/Irregular Bleeding: Very heavy periods, long periods, or spotting between cycles.
😣 Chronic Pelvic Pain: Constant pain that doesn't just happen during your period.
❤️‍🩹 Pain During/After S*x: Deep, aching pain (dyspareunia).
💩 Bowel/Bladder Changes: Painful bowel movements or urination, especially around your cycle.
🤰 Infertility: Difficulty getting pregnant.
🔋 Severe Fatigue: Constant exhaustion that isn't relieved by rest.
🤰 "Endo Belly": Severe, often painful bloating that comes and goes.

Your pain is not "normal" and you do not have to just "push through."
