23% of maternal deaths in the U.S. are tied to mental health and substance use.

Black women are 2× more likely to experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder — and 50% will never receive treatment.

That’s not a clinical gap. That’s a systemic failure.

PMADs include perinatal depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and postpartum psychosis. They’re real, they’re common, and they’re treatable — but only when barriers to care come down.

This is why the work matters. 💜

Nicole McNelis said “It’s not a meltdown. It’s a message.”

Maternal rage moves through stages — triggers, managing anger, outcomes. And for Black mothers especially, expressed anger is too often used to discredit her instead of inform her care.

At TruDoulas, we’re committed to care that listens. 🔁 Save this.

Share it with a mom who needed to hear it.

🌱 TruNourish is officially HERE.

Today, on the last day of Black Maternal Health Week, TruDoulas of New Jersey launched TruNourish, our Food program bringing fresh produce, whole foods, and real nourishment directly to pregnant and postpartum families we serve in Trenton.

This isn’t just a food giveaway. It’s a statement.

Black birthing people face some of the highest rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in this country. Food insecurity is one of the factors no one wants to talk about. You cannot heal, recover, or thrive postpartum when you don’t know what’s in your refrigerator. Telling a new mother to “eat well” without removing the barriers to doing so is not care. It’s a suggestion.

TruNourish changes that.

Speaking truth to power. ✨

Honored to lend my voice during Black Maternal Health Week—centering equity, dignity, and real support for Black mothers.

Leaving full. Coming back stronger because the work continues. 🖤

Behind every statistic is a story.

Behind every story is a mother who deserved better.

This Black Maternal Health Week, we commit to listening, learning, and doing the work to change the narrative.

🖤 Tomorrow it begins. 🖤

Starting tomorrow, April 11th, we honor, amplift, and celebrate Black Mamas, Black birth workers, and the movement that has been fighting for our lives for decades.

Black Maternal Health Week 2026 | April 11–17

“Rooted in Justice & Joy” 🌱

This week we recognize the Black doulas, midwives, nurses, advocates, and community healers — right here in New Jersey and across the nation — who show up every single day to protect Black mothers and babies.
The stats are sobering. Black women are still dying at disproportionate rates. But the movement is LOUDER. The community is STRONGER. And the work continues. 💪🏾

Get ready. This week matters. WE matter.

Stay tuned all week as we celebrate and uplift the voices of Black birth workers and mamas in our community. 🤍

We are beyond grateful for our incredible Parent Community Advocate here at TruDoulas of NJ, who went above and beyond to secure a generous donation of Enfamil Gentlease infant formula for our families.

She came to us as a mom who experienced our services firsthand and now she's pouring that same love and care right back into our community. This is exactly what TruDoulas is all about. 🍼✨

To the families who will benefit from this gift you are seen, supported, and never alone on this journey.
