In addition to the Essex County Manumissions of Slaves Book, we’re excited to announce that we can now offer expanded access to the Essex County Birth Certificates of Children of Slaves Book, 1804-1843. This book contains copies of birth certificates filed by Essex County enslavers with the County Clerk after the passing of the 1804 law "An act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery." The law pronounced every child born to an enslaved mother after July 4, 1804 to be 'free' at birth, but bound as a servant to the owner of their mother until the age of 25 for males and 21 for females. It is now viewable, in its entirety, on our website. This book provides valuable genealogical and historical context for the lives of enslaved people in Essex County. [CESCL002]
