"Why I Choose to Support CHSofNJ"

One of the moments that stays with me most is visiting a CHSofNJ high school daycare. The room was filled with newborns and toddlers—the children of young, single mothers who are working tirelessly to finish school and build a better future.

CHSofNJ makes that possible. Their child development centers don’t just “watch” children; they create a safe, nurturing space where babies thrive and mothers can stay in class, graduate, and pursue their goals. It’s wraparound support that breaks cycles, restores hope, and strengthens families.

Seeing that in action is when I truly understood the heart of CHSofNJ’s mission.

"Why Support CHSofNJ?"

Your gift does far more than meet an immediate need—it transforms a trajectory.

When you support CHSofNJ, you
• keep a child safe,
• uplift a parent in crisis, and
• stabilize and strengthen an entire family.

It’s an investment in dignity, resilience, and long-term impact for our community.

If you’re looking for a way to make a meaningful, lasting difference, CHSofNJ is where it happens.

It was all smiles today—right up until we gently reminded Julie that she cannot take home all the babies!

Our holiday celebrations with CUNA, BURP, and Home-Based Early Head Start moms and babies brought the true magic of the season to life. Moments like these turn us all back into children for a little while and remind us exactly why we come to work each day: to support, uplift, and celebrate families.

Here’s to joy, connection, and the incredible families we’re honored to serve.

Heartfelt thanks to Shruti and her family for delivering holiday donations!

Thanks also to the members of the Zonta Club of Trenton/Mercer. Their thoughtful gifts — clothes, toys, books, and non-perishable food — will bring joy and comfort to so many of the families we serve.

And yes… Lisa is still amazed that all of those donations managed to fit into her tiny Subaru! 🚗✨

"Why I Choose to Support CHSofNJ"

My commitment to The Children’s Home Society of New Jersey is rooted in a personal experience that left a lasting impression. I spoke with a foster parent who cares for four children. As she shared their stories—each one more heartbreaking than the last—I was reminded just how critical CHSofNJ’s work is.

Behind every child’s story is a team of CHSofNJ professionals working tirelessly to ensure safety, stability, and hope. Their dedication doesn’t just change lives—it transforms futures.

"Why support CHSofNJ?"

The services CHSofNJ provides to children and families are truly invaluable. From strengthening families to protecting children, their impact reaches far beyond the moment—it echoes for generations.

I'm proud to champion this mission and the extraordinary work happening every single day.

Before joining the Board of The Children’s Home Society of New Jersey, I volunteered as a dance instructor with TEDI, one of the organization's school-based programs in Trenton.

What I witnessed there changed me.

TEDI did far more than teach dance steps—it sparked joy, boosted confidence, and helped children tap into their passions. I’ll never forget learning that school attendance peaked on TEDI days. That simple fact spoke volumes about how much the program meant to students and how deeply it enriched their lives.

But the real turning point came when I realized that TEDI was only one part of CHSofNJ’s far-reaching work. This single program, which I had seen transform children firsthand, represented just a small piece of the organization’s impact. Understanding the breadth of the agency's services—and how they strengthen families and communities every day—ultimately inspired me to join the Board.

Why support CHSofNJ?

When you invest in CHSofNJ—whether through your time, expertise, or financial support—you’re not just uplifting one program. You’re powering an entire ecosystem of services that changes lives across New Jersey. Your contribution multiplies, reaching children, parents, and families who rely on CHSofNJ to achieve their fullest potential.

I give because I’ve seen the difference. And I hope you’ll join me in supporting the work that makes our communities stronger.

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Joan Healy as the new Director of the Mercer County WIC Program at The Children’s Home Society of New Jersey.

Joan brings nearly nine years of experience from Rutgers Cooperative Extension—more than seven of which she spent managing the Mercer County SNAP-Ed Program. During her tenure, she led a team of nutrition educators delivering hands-on nutrition and cooking classes for SNAP-eligible families and advanced sustainable policy, systems, and environmental change initiatives. Her leadership helped schools, food pantries, and community partners expand healthy food access and support families in making nutritious choices on a budget.

For the past five years, Joan has also served as co-chair of the Trenton Health Team’s Mercer County Food Stakeholders coalition and has collaborated statewide to strengthen food systems and address food insecurity. Her work has brought together healthcare institutions, food pantries, farmers, school districts, advocacy groups, academia, faith communities, and nonprofits—building partnerships that make healthier communities possible.

Joan’s background spans community nutrition, global consumer product marketing at Johnson & Johnson, and leadership roles within the Diocese of Trenton. Across every role, she has championed staff development, collaboration, and excellence in service.

A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Joan holds an MBA in Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a BS in Nutritional Sciences from Rutgers University. Her passion for nutrition is deeply personal—she experienced the healing power of healthy food while recovering from a chronic illness more than 30 years ago.

We are excited for Joan to bring her expertise, compassion, and commitment to equity to CHSofNJ as she leads our efforts to expand and strengthen WIC services for families across Mercer County.

Please join us in welcoming Joan to the CHSofNJ team!

As part of our collaboration with the American Heart Association, our WIC staff recently received a four-hour training on gestational diabetes and hypertension since they work closely with pregnant mothers in Mercer County.

In total, 20 staff members were trained, and the professional development session was facilitated by Vicky Coll, the Community Impact Director for the American Heart Association in New Jersey, with assistance from Stephanie Oliveira de Araujo.

Our internal efforts were coordinated by our nurse, Vilma Aguirre, from our Perinatal Community Integration Model.

A Reunion 60 Years in the Making — Made Possible by Supporters Like You ✨

This Giving Tuesday, we’re honored to share a story that shows the profound impact your generosity can have.

At 80 years old, Jane reached out to CHSofNJ hoping to find the daughter she had placed for adoption in the 1960s. With the compassionate guidance of our Adoption Search and Reunion team—services made possible through donor support—Jane received counseling to prepare for a life-changing search.

Within one month, her daughter Jill was located.

Both women received counseling and thoughtful, step-by-step support as they navigated the complex emotions of reconnection. With our staff’s guidance, they exchanged letters, photos, and eventually phone calls—each message bringing them closer.

What followed was a reunion neither had dared to imagine.

Jill shared, “I met a stranger on Monday morning and said goodbye to a family member on Thursday afternoon.”
And Jane reflected, “It was truly healing. I found understanding, forgiveness, and a sense of peace.”

Today, they speak often, visit regularly, and continue to build the relationship they waited six decades to have.

💛 This is the power of your Giving Tuesday donation.
You help create compassionate, supported pathways for adoptees and birth families to reconnect, heal, and grow—no matter how much time has passed.

If this story moved you, please consider making a gift today. Your support makes moments like this possible.

Sometimes, one visit can change everything. 💛

A woman arrived at CHSofNJ seeking a pregnancy test. Through language barriers and worry, she shared that she believed she was entering menopause after missing several periods. Instead, our staff gently delivered life-changing news: she was already 24 weeks into a healthy pregnancy.

From that moment on, she didn’t have to navigate the journey alone. CHSofNJ connected her with healthcare providers to support her throughout the remainder of her pregnancy, and she joined our CUNA support and education group for expectant mothers—where she built friendships, found her voice, and received resources to prepare for her baby’s arrival.

This Giving Tuesday, you can help ensure that every woman—no matter her language, background, or circumstance—has a safe place to turn and a community ready to support her.
Hope begins with you.

Sometimes, all it takes is a check-in call.

During a routine outreach call, one of our Kinship Navigator Program staff members learned that longtime participant Ms. R had just experienced a devastating house fire.

In that moment, the focus shifted from paperwork to people.

Thankfully, Ms. R and her granddaughter were away visiting family when the fire occurred, and their homeowners' insurance placed them in a hotel as they began the long process of rebuilding. Once CHSofNJ confirmed they were safe, our team immediately stepped in—helping replace critical documents lost in the fire, resolving service disruptions caused by missing paperwork, and ensuring Ms. R could continue receiving support for the 2025–2026 year.

Our staff didn’t stop there. They worked quickly to secure additional emergency funds so Ms. R could begin replacing essential personal belongings lost in the fire. It was one more step toward helping her family regain stability, dignity, and hope.

This is our mission in action: showing up with compassion, meeting families where they are, and walking beside them as they rebuild.

And this is the impact you make possible.
Your Giving Tuesday gift helps ensure families like Ms. R’s never face hardship alone.
