Alzheimers Research Foundation

Alzheimers Research Foundation The goal of Alzheimer’s Research Foundation is simple… TO FIND A CURE FOR ALZHEIMER’S.

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and currently affects over 5 million Americans. Discovered over 100 years ago by Doctor Alois Alzheimer, it is a progressive neurological disease that causes memory loss, confusion, and a decline in functionality. While the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are age 65 and older, up to 5 percent of people with Alzheimer’s are in their 40’s and 50’s.

Alzheimer’s can be a devastating disease both for the people who suffer from it, and for friends and family members who have to deal with the fact that their loved one no longer remembers them. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s…but thanks to organizations like Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, we’re getting closer.

What if the parts of our DNA once dismissed as “dark matter” actually play a role in Alzheimer’s disease? With support from the McKnight Brain Institute and the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, researchers are developing molecules designed to specifically target these proteins and test whether reducing them could positively impact disease models.

Progress in Alzheimer’s research doesn’t happen by playing it safe. It happens by asking difficult questions and daring to explore the unknown.

Behind every breakthrough in Alzheimer’s research is a team willing to ask difficult questions and the support that makes those discoveries possible. At the recent MBI Insights: Accelerator Data Blitz, researchers like Dr. Lin Nguyen shared how funding from the McKnight Brain Institute and the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation is helping advance new ideas, build research teams, and drive meaningful progress in understanding Alzheimer’s disease. From the lab to the community, this work is deeply personal. Through local Alzheimer’s walks, outreach events, and conversations with families, researchers are creating connections that go far beyond science. A monthly $25 donation can help support the next generation of researchers, breakthrough ideas, and the future of Alzheimer’s research and prevention. Together, we can help move research forward.

Supporting someone with Alzheimer’s isn’t about having the perfect words. It’s about showing up with patience, compassion, and understanding. If someone you love is living with Alzheimer’s, remember: connection still matters. At the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, we believe education, awareness, and research are key to creating a future with better support, treatments, and hope for families everywhere.

Fixing Alzheimer’s isn’t optional. It’s urgent. Dr. Gordon S. Mitchell, Deputy Director at the MBI and Director of the Center for Breathing Research and Therapeutics, is driven by one goal: understanding the disease well enough to actually stop it. Because this isn’t just research, it’s personal. Like so many, he’s seen firsthand how devastating Alzheimer’s can be. And despite how many lives it touches, we still don’t have effective ways to slow it… let alone cure it. That’s why this work matters. The deeper we go into the science, the closer we get to real solutions.

Be part of what comes next. Support the research. Support the future.

What if we could understand and even influence brain changes before Alzheimer’s fully develops?

Our NeuroScholar is studying both cognitively healthy adults and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using non-invasive brain stimulation to see how memory responds across groups. Because the difference between healthy aging and early decline is not always visible, but it is measurable.

This research brings us closer to earlier intervention and a deeper understanding of the brain.
In partnership with ARF, advancing research that brings us closer to prevention.

Some signs are easy to dismiss at first.
Repeating stories. Forgetting familiar places. Struggling to find the right words.
But recognizing the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease can make a difference. Early awareness leads to earlier conversations, support, and research opportunities that may help protect brain health.
Knowing what to look for could help someone you love. 💜
Every breakthrough starts with support. Your donation helps fund the future of Alzheimer’s research, early detection, and hope for millions of families affected by this disease.

What if a drug known for weight loss could also impact the brain? Our NeuroScholar, Dr. Brittany Defeis, is studying GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide to understand how they may influence cognition, inflammation, and even structural changes in the brain. Focusing on adults 65+ with type 2 diabetes, this work tracks patients before and after treatment to uncover what’s really happening beneath the surface. Because the conversation isn’t just about weight, it’s about how these medications may reshape behavior, brain health, and aging itself.
This is what the future of brain research looks like. 🧠

Behind every breakthrough is a reason. A grandfather. An aunt. A patient. A memory. Alzheimer’s isn’t distant for our neuroscholars, it’s personal. And that’s what drives them to keep going. Over 50 million people worldwide are affected. This is why the work we do matters.

Help us move the research forward.
