Vox News summarized research being done by the NIH on one tiny molecule that alters how physical forces are monitored and ascend into your conscious awareness. One molecule makes the difference if you feel the fly on your shoulder or are able to walk with your eyes closed.
Close your eyes. Can you touch your left ankle? You're using proprioception. It is the ability to "know" where you body is in space. Not having a working piezo2 gene, discovered just ten years ago, handicaps your ability to navigate your world because your proprioception is blocked.
The handful of subjects who have a defective piezo2 gene, have no physical issues with their skeleton or muscles. Their Nervous System lacks the ability to process external inputs making it hard for them to control their body.
