I spend a lot of time in my head; assessing complex labs for complex patients.

But I also spend a lot of time thinking about how our lives and choices impact our health.

Because every thing medicates us in some way. It’s why I’m particular about who I spend my time with, what I read, what I watch, what I listen to.

I’m insistent on having practical practices that create peace in my mind and body. And that’s medicine!

Whether it’s getting outside between patients, meditation, music, watching the sun rise and set, grounding, breath work, movement, stillness, connecting to self (God, Higher Self), tuning forks, drumming, listening to birds, prayer, awareness of my surroundings; these things matter.

They medicate in a positive way!
And only you can decide how to dose them.

I’m curious; what are your peace practices 👇 that are non negotiable?

There’s medicine in the weeds. 🌱

What we call weeds are often potent plants with restortive, tonifying, detoxifying, nutritive and purifying properties.

Dandelion is my absolute favorite by the way; great for the liver, kidney, gallbladder and lymph. Deeply nutritive and deliciously bitter.

Spring time is a new beginning but it also offers us time to tend to our own weeds .

To take inventory of the parts of our lives and ourselves that are overgrown and take up too much space in our lives and minds.

🌱

The parts of the garden that can be overlooked and overwhelming.

The ugly parts of ourselves.
The bits of us that we keep hidden.
The beliefs that no longer work.
The things that you don’t want to get rid of.

🌱

Yet, the things that we ignore anchor in deeper.

🌱

Tending to the weeds involves carefully and objectively looking at the things that hinder our growth;

Our mental scripts, our beliefs and behaviors, the narratives that aren’t useful anymore.

Tending to the weeds allows us to till the soil so that we can clearly see a new landscape.

And to plant new thoughts, patterns, beliefs, & habits.

🌱

There’s medicine in the weeds, but sometimes the garden needs to be pruned in order to make room for something new & beautiful to grow.

🌱

May you observe the medicine in the weeds.

May you honor all that they have taught you.

May you pluck & plant with intention.

Sunlight is a nutrient.

By definition it provides nourishment essential for the maintenance of life.
☀️
It’s essential.
It’s non negotiable for good health.

☀️

Our bodies are nourished directly by sunlight or indirectly by eating foods, drinking fluids or breathing air that has been vitalized by the suns energy.

☀️

Light striking the body literally alters the basic biology functions involved in processing food as fuel. Light can stimulate certain enzymes to be more effective.

Exposure to sunlight decreases resting heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate & increases energy, endurance, & stress tolerance.

☀️

So, basically you are mini walking breathing photocell.

There’s been a bird of some kind outside my car every morning this week.

But today I was gifted an exceptional surprise … seeing this hawk low in the tree branches.

I was able to get really close without him being bothered, and eventually I was sure he was wounded.
But he wasn’t.
He was just comfortable being in his surroundings and hunting - just carrying out his nature.

And he comes as a timely reminder.

I’ve been speaking a lot with patients these last few weeks about how far we’ve moved from our innate natural ways of being.

No, I’m not necessarily recommending living in a cave, but rather I’m reflecting on how artificial and busy our lives have become in less than a single generation. Within my own lifetime and adulthood even. And the cost of that.

So I post this with a question;

What habits and behaviors feel unnatural to you ?

What aspects of disconnection no longer fit?

What part(s) of your nature are you suppressing?

I believe that there is a deep calling for may of us; a calling back to simplicity.
To flow.
To intuition.
To less hurriedness and more pausing.

Like this hawk - to rest when needed.
To feel safe when doing so.
To feed when it is ready.
To observe.
And to listen.
To pause.
And still be prepared.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be hard or time consuming.

It can be fast, inexpensive and you don’t even have to turn on the stove 😊

I’m sharing my recent obsession; this comforting, satisfying, satiating salad that I’ve been looking forward to nightly for the last few weeks as life gets busy.

It’s fast & simple:
🥬 bed of greens (arugula, baby kale, spinach)
🥬 layer of brown lentils (I get the French lentils from Trader Joe’s)
🥬 cucumber, cherry tomatoes and avocado
🥬 3-4 hardboiled eggs
🥬 aged Parmesan for extra protein
🥬 Kimchi or sauerkraut for that xtra kick and fiber and probiotics
🥬 olive oil, ACV, salt and pepper
🥬 olives (sometimes)

If you try it, let me know if you love it as much as I do. And drop your favorite go-to, quick & healthy, no-cook, weekday ideas below 👇

I’m curious.

I like taking a deeper look at things.

I like staring up at the trees, turning my head towards the stars and trying to understand the interconnectedness of all things.

And that includes my patients.

So when I hear the them say that they’ve had labs done and that everything is “normal”, I ask them to look deeper with me.

A Vitamin B12 of 302 is normal.
A Vitamin D3 of 33 is normal.
A TSH of 3.90 is normal.
A ferritin of 29 is normal.
A magnesium of 1.8 is normal.
A cortisol of 4 or 21 are both normal.

None of these are optimal.

It’s “normal” simply equates to just not being diagnosable.
