There’s been a bird of some kind outside my car every morning this week.

But today I was gifted an exceptional surprise … seeing this hawk low in the tree branches.

I was able to get really close without him being bothered, and eventually I was sure he was wounded.
But he wasn’t.
He was just comfortable being in his surroundings and hunting - just carrying out his nature.

And he comes as a timely reminder.

I’ve been speaking a lot with patients these last few weeks about how far we’ve moved from our innate natural ways of being.

No, I’m not necessarily recommending living in a cave, but rather I’m reflecting on how artificial and busy our lives have become in less than a single generation. Within my own lifetime and adulthood even. And the cost of that.

So I post this with a question;

What habits and behaviors feel unnatural to you ?

What aspects of disconnection no longer fit?

What part(s) of your nature are you suppressing?

I believe that there is a deep calling for may of us; a calling back to simplicity.
To flow.
To intuition.
To less hurriedness and more pausing.

Like this hawk - to rest when needed.
To feel safe when doing so.
To feed when it is ready.
To observe.
And to listen.
To pause.
And still be prepared.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be hard or time consuming.

It can be fast, inexpensive and you don’t even have to turn on the stove 😊

I’m sharing my recent obsession; this comforting, satisfying, satiating salad that I’ve been looking forward to nightly for the last few weeks as life gets busy.

It’s fast & simple:
🥬 bed of greens (arugula, baby kale, spinach)
🥬 layer of brown lentils (I get the French lentils from Trader Joe’s)
🥬 cucumber, cherry tomatoes and avocado
🥬 3-4 hardboiled eggs
🥬 aged Parmesan for extra protein
🥬 Kimchi or sauerkraut for that xtra kick and fiber and probiotics
🥬 olive oil, ACV, salt and pepper
🥬 olives (sometimes)

If you try it, let me know if you love it as much as I do. And drop your favorite go-to, quick & healthy, no-cook, weekday ideas below 👇

I’m curious.

I like taking a deeper look at things.

I like staring up at the trees, turning my head towards the stars and trying to understand the interconnectedness of all things.

And that includes my patients.

So when I hear the them say that they’ve had labs done and that everything is “normal”, I ask them to look deeper with me.

A Vitamin B12 of 302 is normal.
A Vitamin D3 of 33 is normal.
A TSH of 3.90 is normal.
A ferritin of 29 is normal.
A magnesium of 1.8 is normal.
A cortisol of 4 or 21 are both normal.

None of these are optimal.

It’s “normal” simply equates to just not being diagnosable.

Things are clearest when the waters are calm.

It’s a quote that I heard recently that really resonated.

And things are all but calm or clear for many people right now. As a doc, I’ve had more calls about acute anxiety this week than I have had since the pandemic.

There’s a lot that we can do to regulate our nervous systems and I’ve talked about this before, but sometimes we just need a little help.

Sometimes the body needs to center and stress needs to be alleviated before the brain can feel safe again.

So I’m offering up some suggestions.
(See next slides) These are safe for most people without interactions. They are also non habit forming and non-sedating.

I’ll give a simple rundown of each below
👇

1. Serenagen. My all time favorite.
Great for anxiety and those that feel “tired but wired”. Patients often report feeling like they have more capacity to handle life. This calms the mind and softens the heart.

2. Neurocalm.
For situational anxiety; it helps to reduce overthinking and a brain and body that are racing. GABA helps to reduce over stimulation and L-theanine puts you more into the alpha state - calm and relaxed yet alert.

3. Cortisol Manager.
For that rise in nighttime cortisol that prevents you from falling asleep or staying asleep.

4. Magnesium malate. My preferred form.
This works for sleep and relaxation. But we also need this mineral for over 350 reactions in the body.

You can find them online or at the link below 👇 with a small discount.

The branches can only grow towards the sun if the roots are stable.

🌳

We can get so caught up in where we are headed, sometimes!

We can get obsessed with what & who we are becoming.
Where we are going.
What we are doing.

We can get so caught up in moving upwards, that we forget to tend to the roots.

🌳

Forever thinking about the past and projecting ourselves into the future.

Preoccupied with memory & obsessed with expectation.

🌳

But it’s in this present moment; when there’s nothing to do, nowhere to go, and no-one to be that we tend to the roots.

So, take the time; take all the time to tend to your roots. To slow down & drop in. To listen to yourself.

This isn’t about luxury; it’s necessity.

I think we are all at a time where we need to remember that there’s still so much beauty in the world. And goodness. And kindness. 💕

I haven’t posted for a while but I feel compelled to share this message. Hopefully it helps one person.

I wanted to offer up some guidance or a suggestion that could be helpful in the event that you or a loved one are experiencing shock and grief during this time.

Homeopathic remedies and plant essences work "energetically" to process deep emotions. And there’s a lot of emotions that need to be processed and moved through the body.

I will list a few below that could be useful.

1. Bach Remedy - Star of Bethlehem. This is for distress due to trauma. The remedy can provide comfort and emotional healing.
2. Homeopathic Ignatia. This is for sudden loss, heartbreak, shock especially if there is intense sadness and emotional numbness associated with the event.
3. Homeopathic Aconite. This is similar to Ignatia above but is different in that it also touches upon the element of fear and / or loss of safety.
4. Bach Remedy - Sweet Chestnut and Honeysuckle can help with processing grief and trauma.

All of these can be used together or separately. Personally, I like combining the Bach remedies. They are gentle and effective and both the Bach remedies and homeopathic can be given to kids.

Feel free to share.

If the first day of January feels heavy, resistant and slow, there’s nothing wrong with you.

You are simply in tune with nature’s rhythms.

❄️

And it’s why many of our best intended resolutions flop within weeks of starting.

❄️

Winter is a time for rest and relaxation.
For restoration.

Animals hibernate.
Seeds are frozen under the earth.
The northern hemisphere is quiet and still.

❄️

This is a time for dreaming of what comes next but more importantly, for closing out the past year.

❄️

For honoring what you’ve accomplished, lost and become before stepping into the newness of Spring.

When is the last time that you looked at the night sky?

Or watched the sun cross from one horizon to another?

🌕
☀️

Something as simple as just looking “up” seems like a luxury in our “modern” lives.

☀️
🌙

But there’s medicine to be found in this!

Our ancestors knew it.

And this isn’t about living in a cave; it’s about pausing and connecting vs racing and consuming!

🌙
☀️

You can buy all the supplements, the gadgets and tools, but they won’t replace what we’ve lost.

And that’s our connection to nature; the natural flow of life, the rhythms that our bodies still remember. The need for stillness, for wonder, for contemplation and awe!

☀️
🌙

You’ll make a dozen resolutions for the “new year”. All outward manifestations and expenditures on already depleted energy reserves.

But can you sit in the discomfort of pausing and connecting?

Connecting to yourself, your breath, to others, to nature, to the sunrise and the night sky?

☀️
🌙

Because this is how your nervous system heals.
Not through doing more but by pausing & embracing moments that require nothing but your prescence.

☀️

There is healing and magic in these simple things.

Dose high and let your life be your medicine
