When we focus on what we cannot control, it can make us feel stuck, and the more we focus on things outside of our control, the more likely we are to feel anxiety, anger, and frustration. No matter how angry we get, we cannot change things outside our circle of control. However, when we focus on things we can control, it improves our mood, and makes us feel confident and empowered! We tend to try to control things to bring about a feeling of peace, but actually - focusing on our power to control the things we can, can foster peace and comfort!

Trauma does NOT make us stronger…it actually can affect the way we function day to day and the way we show up in relationships! When thoughts and memories of a traumatic event become consistent or get worse, they may lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This happens when we avoid!

It is essential to explore and process traumatic memories in a safe and secure environment like therapy! This means being aware of triggers and thoughts and feelings associated with the trauma.

We must support our body to heal and regulate our nervous systems. We do this by supporting our system to move through triggers and build capacity. This is typically taught in childhood, although many of us may not have ben taught how to process and regulate difficult emotions and memories.

Depression is not just “being sad” or “frequent crying”, although that may happen too. Depression is not just something in our minds, but rather something we can feel physically and mentally.

😓 Depression can show up in many different forms such as a messy room or not having enough self care, or being always tired that you’re sleeping too much or maybe not enough. It can also present as suicidal thoughts - all which should be handled with care and taken seriously.

What is attachment? 👩‍❤️‍👨

The theory of attachment was formed by John Bowlby in the 50’s/60’s. Attachment is characterized by “lasting psychological connectedness between human beings”. Attachment style is said to be shaped by early childhood experiences, through the infant/caregiver relationship. Attachment styles can, however, change through adulthood, and insecure attachment styles can be healed through psychotherapy!

Recognizing our attachment style can help us better understand and recognize our vulnerabilities in relationships and friendships! 🫶🏻
