Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us that mental health is just as important as physical health.

For many individuals with disabilities, mental health challenges can be compounded by isolation, financial stress, housing instability, grief, trauma, and navigating complex systems. No one should have to face those challenges alone.

At Springhill Pooled Trust, we believe every person deserves dignity, compassion, stability, and support. While we help beneficiaries manage funds within SSI and Medicaid guidelines, our mission goes far beyond financial administration. We strive to help individuals improve their quality of life, maintain independence, and feel supported through life’s challenges.

This month, we encourage everyone to:
• Check in on loved ones and neighbors
• Lead with kindness and patience
• Reduce stigma surrounding mental health
• Reach out for support when needed
• Remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness

To our beneficiaries, families, referral partners, and community supporters: thank you for helping create a more compassionate and inclusive community for people with disabilities and mental health needs.

You matter. Your story matters. And support matters. 💚

May is Elder Law Month — a time to focus on protecting the rights, dignity, and financial well-being of older adults and individuals with disabilities.

Planning ahead matters. Understanding long-term care options, preserving eligibility for public benefits, or ensuring your wishes are honored, having the right legal tools in place can make all the difference.

At Springhill, we’re committed to helping individuals and families navigate complex decisions with clarity and compassion — including the use of special needs pooled trusts to support quality of life while maintaining essential benefits.

If you or a loved one could benefit from guidance, now is a great time to start the conversation.

CHN was awarded a generous grant from Springhill Housing Corporation for our Critical Needs Fund.

This grant will go a long way in supporting people with disabilities. These funds enable CHN to provide basic needs and goods and services including furniture, household items, and cover moving costs for households in need. This helps people with disabilities facing a housing crisis move into housing and make their new housing feel like home. Together, we are making a positive impact in the lives of many. 🏠

🎁 Giving Thoughtfully This Holiday Season 🎁

When a loved one with a disability receives needs-based benefits like SSI or Medicaid, some gifts — especially cash — can unintentionally put those benefits at risk.

Why it matters:
Cash, large checks, or high-value assets may count as income or resources and affect eligibility. Rules vary by state, so it’s important to give carefully.

Safer ways to give:
✔️ Contribute to a Third-Party Special Needs Trust
✔️ Use an ABLE account (one per person; annual contribution limits apply)
✔️ Pay directly for experiences or services like tickets, lessons, or memberships

Great gift ideas that are usually safe:
🎨 Books, games, art supplies
📱 Electronics or adaptive technology
🧸 Sensory-friendly or comfort items
♿ Accessibility-focused tools that support independence

Community Housing Network (CHN) is proud to administer the IDD Housing Access Pilot Program (IHAPP) — a statewide initiative funded by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) through Housing Community Development Funds (HCDF).

IHAPP’s mission is to expand access to affordable, inclusive, and community-integrated housing by supporting new construction, rehabilitation, and acquisition of units — both in mixed-income rental developments and through homeownership pathways.
Across Michigan, thousands of individuals with IDD face housing barriers due to limited income, a shortage of accessible homes, and reliance on aging caregivers. IHAPP is investing in accessibility, integration, and meaningful choice to create real housing solutions.

💙 Everyone deserves the opportunity to live safely, independently, and fully included in their community.
