We’re flooding Topeka with good news from rural Kansas. 🌻📬

Here’s the idea: instead of only asking for funding, we’re showing what it already made possible.

If your community has seen impact from a state program, tell that story. We’ll mail you a postcard so you can send a short, personal note to your state legislator reminding them why rural deserves to stay front and center in budget decisions.

Want in? Fill out the form to receive a postcard in the mail. Hurry. Postcards will go fast.

HIGHLAND COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM
Business of the Month by Melanie Davis

Often called HCAT, the volunteer-led Highland Community Action Team is made up of neighbors dedicated to making
Highland a welcoming, connected place. Guided by the belief that small acts of service create lasting impact, HCAT members show up not for recognition, but to meet community needs and support one another.
HCAT focuses on both service and connection by organizing
local events that bring families and neighbors together and strengthen a sense of belonging. Volunteers also devote
significant time to beautifying the town—maintaining planters and park spaces, planting trees, assisting with the annual town
clean-up and supporting projects like playground equipment, street banners and trash receptacles. The popular Yard of the
Month program further encourages community pride throughout the summer and fall.
Beyond Highland, HCAT helps coordinate Meals on Wheels deliveries to surrounding communities, reflecting its commitment
to caring for others beyond city limits. Looking ahead, the organization continues to rely on volunteers of all ages and welcomes new members and ideas. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Highland Senior Center. Community updates may be found on Facebook at Highland Community Action Team – Highland Pride.

Business of the Month:
Miller Trash Service
By Melanie Davis,

Miller Trash Service Inc., Troy, Kansas, has been serving Doniphan County with dependable, local waste services for more than 17 years. The family-owned business was founded in November 2007 after recognizing a need for a reliable trash service in the area. What began with just three employees has grown steadily alongside the community it serves.
Today, Miller Trash Service provides residential and commercial trash services, as well as dumpster and roll-off container services. As customer demand increased over the years, the business expanded its offerings to meet those needs. In November 2024, Miller Trash Service reached another milestone by taking over operations of the Doniphan County Transfer Station for the county. The company now employs seven people, reflecting both its growth and continued investment in the local workforce.
What sets Miller Trash Service apart is its commitment to being a small, local, family-run operation. Owners say they pride themselves on being reliable, honest, and trustworthy while doing their best to keep repairs and services local whenever possible. Supporting other small businesses and keeping tax dollars within Doniphan County is a priority they believe strengthens the entire community.
Like many businesses, Miller Trash Service faces ongoing challenges, including rising fuel, parts, and disposal costs, as well as weather and road conditions. As a family-owned company, balancing business demands with family time can also be difficult. The Millers shared that they are planning a family vacation this summer, during which trash services days may change for a brief time. Customers will be notified with details through the company’s page.
In addition to regular trash services, the Doniphan County Transfer Station is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 4:30 p.m., as well as the first and third Saturdays of each month from 8 a.m. to noon. The transfer station can be reached at 785-990-0103.
Office hours for Miller Trash Service are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and customers are encouraged to follow the company on Facebook for updates on weather-related delays and service information.
Miller Trash Service remains committed to serving Doniphan County with dependable service, local values, and a strong appreciation for the community that continues to support them.
