Cases of West Nile virus (WNV) are rising across Missouri and the rest of the country. This infection often causes no symptoms, but about 1 in 5 people may develop a flu-like illness with fever, headache or body aches. In rare cases, especially in older adults or people with weakened immune systems, it can cause serious problems like swelling of the brain or spinal cord and/or paralysis.

Missouri currently has 16 human cases of West Nile virus, resulting in 15 hospitalizations and three deaths. This is a large increase compared to previous years.

🦟 Use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin or IR3535.
🦟 Wear long sleeves and pants when outside, especially at dawn and dusk.
🦟 Dump out standing water.
🦟 Make sure your door and window screens are secure.
