John has always known where he belongs - in a kitchen.

Now in his second year at Independence College, John is turning a long-held dream into a real career path. While balancing college classes and life in his apartment, he's already secured two jobs in the restaurant industry - proof of his talent, drive, and determination.

This January, John takes his next big step: enrolling in a culinary program at a local community college as he works towards becoming a steakhouse chef.

Independence like this is built through partnership. Our members and families invest in their futures, and community support helps fill the gap so that we can offer the highly personalized coaching, living support, and vocational training that help make achievements like John's possible.

We had an incredible visit yesterday from !

OMO member Chris - who’s proud to call Representative Stevens a friend - invited her to tour our offices and catch up on the work we’re doing to support people with developmental disabilities in living independently.

She’s already familiar with our mission, but we were excited to update her on our programs, including Independence College, which helps people gain the skills and confidence to live on their own. Chris shared what he loves most about living independently - and some of the challenges too.

We also talked about key issues impacting our members, like inclusive and affordable communities and benefits access, and even swapped favorite holiday movies!

A huge thank you to Representative Stevens for taking the time to visit, and to Chris for initiating and coordinating this meaningful conversation.

Registration is OPEN for Independence College's 2026-27 academic year!

This 9-month immersive college-like experience is for students with developmental disabilities looking to advance their independence skills.

Students who complete enrollment by February 1 will pay the current 2025-26 tuition rate. After that date, tuition increases.

We are so grateful for our friends at the !

Their long-standing support helps us create meaningful opportunities for our members to learn, grow, and connect with the community.

Earlier this fall, the foundation awarded a generous grant for our Skill Building Program, which empowers members to explore local treasures like the Historic Village, parks, malls, restaurants, and entertainment - everything that makes Troy such a vibrant place!

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Olivia, the foundation’s Executive Director, for a visit. While she stopped by to meet our Independence College students and see what they’ve been working on, it was simply a wonderful chance to connect and share our mission.

Community partners like the Troy Community Foundation truly make a difference, and we couldn’t do it without you!

Wow - you did it!!🎉🎉

We're so grateful for the generosity and encouragement you poured into . It was a powerful reminder of just how strong our community truly is.

With your help, we raised $5,200 (which was doubled due to our generous matching gift) so a whopping $10,400 was raised - enough to support 11 members in our Independent Living Program for a month!
