April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month!

Did you know there are about 185,000 amputations a year in the United States? There are more than 2 million people who live with limb loss. In addition, about 1,900 babies are born each year with a limb difference.

A significant portion of my (Dr. Hayworth here) practice is seeing amputees. Let me tell you, these are some inspiring folks! I have people who get back to work in factories, as truck drivers, or in construction. I have people who hunt, fish, bowl, run, camp, and ride motorcycles. I see people who have been amputees their whole life and others who become one in their 70s. It is by no means easy to live without part of an arm or leg. But with resiliency, persistence, attention to whole body and mind health, and a great prosthetist, many find a successful new normal. One of the best coping strategies? Humor - see attached 😉

Here is Dr. Hayworth’s husband participating in the 30th Annual Judge Arthur O Fisher Memorial Golf Outing, which benefits the Montgomery County Juvenile Court Foundation. RehabMed H and H sponsored a hole which he was happy to find!

This morning Dr. Hayworth and Dr. Hoover volunteered at the run course for the Troy Kids Triathlon. Fun cheering those dedicated kids on and showing them where to go!

As April comes to an end, I want to acknowledge that April is limb loss and limb difference awareness month. A lot of what I (Dr. Hayworth) do in my clinic is work with prosthetists to get appropriate prosthetic limbs for amputees. As you can see, over 500 people lose a limb every day in the US. My prosthetic patients are some of my most dedicated, resilient, and innovative. It is a joy to be part of their journey as they find a new normal!

Today one of the best nurses we have ever known moves on from years of being a rehab RN to an outpatient job. Thank you, Tracy for your dedication to your patients and being not only a phenomenal nurse but also a great friend!

Our staff here at RehabMed H and H consider ourselves very fortunate to have received the Covid-19 vaccines. These vaccines have been shown to be very effective and safe. Side effects are not uncommon following the shot, but these tend to only last a day or two. When you get your vaccine, you can register with V-safe, which the CDC uses for post-vaccine monitoring of any side effects or adverse reactions. We strongly encourage all of our eligible patients to get the vaccine when they are able - we have seen the devastating effects of this virus and believe this feat of science will save many lives!

Here is your physician reminder that there is one correct way to wear a mask, and many, many wrong ways. Make sure the mask fully covers your mouth and nose. And try to avoid touching the mask unless you have recently sanitized your hands.

Some of you may not know that Dr. Hoover is my (Dr. Hayworth’s) dad! For Father’s Day I got him a video from Richard Karn, an actor important to my childhood. He played Al Borland on Home Improvement, a show we watched together after dinner every night! Dad and I both loved this show ❤️

As we see more patients in person in our offices, a reminder that we are asking all patients to wear masks or other cloth coverings for their face during their visit. Also, unless you are the true Phantom of the Opera, it should cover both sides of your face. 😉

Due to knowing that people who are asymptomatic (meaning they lack symptoms of illness) are able to transmit coronavirus to others, we here at RehabMed H and H have been wearing masks in the office for a while. The CDC now recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. Dr. Hayworth’s dogs are demonstrating safe practices!
