Happy Women in Medicine Month! 🏥🩺❤️‍🩹

St. Peter's continues to spotlight the women in our health care system for their pivotal roles in advancing careers in medicine. From doctors to nurses, and from residents to medical students, the women at St. Peter's - like the midwives at Capital Region Midwifery - are shaping the future of health care.

“We all arrive at midwifery in different ways; through personal experiences, mentorship, or a deep belief in promoting the health of women and families. We chose this path because we wanted to be part of a model of care that centers on compassion, shared decision-making, and cultural sensitivity. At Capital Region Midwifery, we create safe spaces for our diverse community and support patients across their lifespans. We are building families, communities, and a legacy of care.

One of our proudest accomplishments has been mentoring new midwives. Teaching while practicing allows us to pass on the traditions that support physiologic birth and well-woman care. Watching students grow into confident, compassionate providers is a powerful reminder of why this work matters. We cannot thank the community enough for their advocacy and persistence in keeping Burdett Birth Center open. We are proud to be a part of such a passionate and driven community. We are very proud of our Centering Pregnancy initiative which involves more time with providers and patient-centered health care. Centering groups allow patients to become involved in their health care, achieving positive health outcomes and a sense of community connection.

What advice do we have to women considering a career in healthcare? Your presence is powerful. Whether you're just beginning or have years of experience, know that you are a vital part of shaping the future of medicine. Advocate fiercely, care deeply, and never underestimate the impact you have on your patients and your community.

Dr. David Kozminski of Capital Region Urology, a practice of St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates, is now performing the Bulkamid procedure. He is one of three surgeons at Capital Region Urology offering the minimally-invasive treatment at St. Peter's and Samaritan hospitals.

Bulkamid is for women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), which causes urine leaks during normal daily activities such as coughing, laughing, exercising or lifting an object. Bulkamid is a series of three to four small injections that takes just 10 – 15 minutes, delivering symptom relief for up to seven years in many patients. We are so grateful for the opportunity to help nurture and care for them at this stage in their development. 💕

What a wonderful way to kick off World Breastfeeding Week! 's Community Health Programs and Capital Region Baby Cafes hosted a free kick-off event at St. Peter's Mercy Auditorium on Friday. Parents-to-be and new parents learned about the importance of breastfeeding, had free support from lactation professionals, infant CPR and baby wearing demonstrations, giveaways, and more! A big thank you to New York state, who helped fund the event, along with the many participating community organizations!
