Sometimes I hear from people that they were “in too much pain to come in for a massage” or “I don’t want to get bodywork when I’m hurting because I won’t enjoy it as much” but massage can be so beneficial for acute strains and pain. This client came to me yesterday unsure if he’d broken a rib and the first words out if his mouth were “it was a tossup today if i would come for my massage or go to the ER”.

After a brief intake and some palpating I realized that he likely had just strained muscles around his shoulder and back after falling off of his bike a couple if days prior. He left with more range if motion and decreased pain.

I will turn a client away if what they are experiencing is at all a question of a more serious condition that can’t be helped and possibly be exacerbated by massage. However, bodywork can be so beneficial in so many different instances. It’s great for relaxing and unwinding but I help support my clients in so many ways that go beyond an hour of relaxation. Feedback like this just reminds me of how I love being able to help and support my clients and is music to my ears.

What does growth feel like to you? I’ve been noticing growth showing up for me in so many ways and the sensations associated with it are wide ranging. The feeling of excitement and anxiety have been coupled in my system for years and as I continue to do my own work with my nervous system I can notice when that belly wrenching feeling of anxiety takes over and yet the reality of forward movement and expansion belies that uncomfortable physical sensation. Being able to allow myself to be in an uncomfortable space is something I continue to work on expanding and growing because inevitably on the other side the settling is greater and ease even more expansive. I’m heading into my 2nd to last training in Somatic Experiencing and will soon be a certified Sonatic Experiencing Practitioner. This work has been powerful in my own healing journey and I’ve had the privilege of bringing it to my clients and witnesses their progress and expanded capacity through this work as well.
