🧠 So you got a concussion…. 🧠

How do you start treatment after a concussion? After an initial 24-48 hour rest period in a low-stim environment (SLEEP, proper nutrition/hydration, and symptom monitoring is important!) it is time to start the process of return to learn and return to play.

Returning to learn/work should take about 8-10 days. It starts with light cognitive activity at home, then progressive return to the school or work environment. It is ok for symptoms to increase slightly during this time, but rest breaks and accommodations should be made.

Return to sport should NOT outpace return to learn, but follows a similar progression. This can take about 7 days if there is no regression. It is started with light aerobic activity, also progressed based on symptoms. It is suggested that this process should be monitored by a medical professional, but before ANY return to team practice, an athlete should be cleared by a qualified clinician.

It is also important to be familiar with your state and/or sport conference laws. Most states regulate how an athlete can be considered ā€œclearedā€ for sports, and some also include school!

Try to work with your coaches, team, and school administrators to communicate and have proper accommodations provided. SEEK MEDICAL GUIDANCE from a qualified PT, OT, AT, and/or MD for proper recovery and clearance.

Be prepared for your sport season! Get a baseline test from Ascent Tahoe to help guide return to learn/work and return to sport decisions!

*this is not personal medical advice - each situation is different and Ascent Tahoe encourages all those with concussion to seek in person and qualified medical care!*

🧠Part 2 of 4 in our WEDNESDAY CONCUSSION SERIES!🧠

There are many signs and symptoms of concussion so it is important to be able to identify them and monitor for changes.

Important to remember: you DO NOT have to black out in order to have a concussion.

Be able to to identify RED FLAGS 🚩 of concussion - these require immediate medical attention, otherwise monitor for changes. If symptoms start to rapidly change or worsen over the first 24-48 hours, they become red flags. If this doesn’t happen, you’re good to start treatment!

Be aware of SECOND IMPACT SYNDROME šŸ’„- a second head injury sustained too close to another can be fatal, so identification is key šŸ”‘

Most concussion symptoms are resolved in 10-14 days, but can last weeks or months. Post-Concussive Syndrome refers to symptoms lasting more than three months! šŸ—“ļø

Education is important as we head into ski season. Next week, we’ll discuss treatment options!

Calling all athletes, coaches, and parents! Heading into a new season of adventure activities, time to review head injuries and what to look out for to protect yourself or other from serious harm & get back to sport safely!

Not all head injuries are concussions, but all concussions are head injuries. Just because you have a concussion doesn’t mean you have *brain damage* - there is likely just a disruption in the function of the brain.

It is important to understand the signs & symptoms of concussion, and educate yourself on the best ways to monitor, treat, return to sport, and even possibly prevent concussion!

Follow along on this 4 part Wednesday series and get prepared for an awesome winter season! 🧠🤘

šŸ’—It’s still October!šŸ’—

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the gals have a lifetime risk of about 1 in 8. The American Cancer Society estimates 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 59,080 cases of non-invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed THIS YEAR.

What can you do? It is important to understand the risk factors, preventive measures, and screening processes. Risk factors include family history, overweight/obesity, ethnicity, and alcohol consumption. Some of these can be modified, some not. It is generally not recommended (or covered by insurance…) for women to get screened before 40 - but this might be too late if you have one or more of the risk factors!

Early detection is important (ask our good friends at !

šŸ’ŖSTRENGTH TRAINING IS YEAR ROUND!šŸ’Ŗ
A lot of times you will hear someone say they don’t train legs in the winter because they’re skiing ā›·ļø , or they don’t train arms in the summer because they’re skiing climb šŸ§—. We’re here to tell ya that’s the opposite of what you want!

When properly dosed and managed according to YOU, your GOALS, and your SPORT, strength training is year-round. Not only will strength training help prepare your body for the demands of your sport, but it can both help you excel and reduce injury risk!

If you want to step up your game, DM us or email info@ascenttahoe.com - we’d be happy to help you get on track with a strength program!

(Side note - TWO MONTHS until local mountains open…that’s about as much time as we’d want to get prepared for upcoming snow sports! Any prep is better than no prep, but now is the time!) šŸ’Ŗ
