Saw these on our last day in Japan (Hiroshima). I didn’t seek out or even try wines from Japan while there (more interested in Sake and beer), but was intrigued when I saw Delaware wine in a touristy little shop. Everything I can learn says that this is made with NY Delaware grapes. The one on the right is Bailey Red, a very popular Japanese red wine grape. The one on the left is more difficult to find out about - the label translates into “Kirisato.” The company’s web site (Miyoshi) doesn’t even list this wine. The web site does indicate that the Delaware is made with Delaware. I didn’t buy or try any of these wines, so this is a just a curious find/post. The other thing I learned is that Japanese are much more open to presenting the technical description (see last slide) to consumers than we are here in the US. ._stephencasscles .native.grapes

All too often it feels as if farmers – generally speaking, of course – wake up in the morning ready to do battle. Do battle with diseases, insects, weeds, equipment, and themselves. This, I offer, is a product of a war-minded mentality that we are habituated to growing up and living in America, and that has become ingrained in our broader farming culture thanks to the military-agricultural-industrial complex and decades of subliminal marketing. We always seem to be at war with something. In order to reverse this approach we need to begin each day with a compassionate mind, full of curiosity, intrigue, wonder, and appreciation.

All too often it feels as if farmers – generally speaking, of course – wake up in the morning ready to do battle.
