🌿 Spice Up Your Health: Functional Benefits of Herbs & Spices

Herbs and spices do more than enhance flavor—they contain bioactive compounds that may support immune health and play a role in cancer prevention.

Here are 6 powerful additions to your kitchen:

🟡 Turmeric (Curcumin)
✔️ Anti-inflammatory & antioxidant
✔️ Studied for its potential to inhibit cancer cell growth

💡 Tip: Pair with black pepper + healthy fats (like olive oil) to improve absorption.

🫚 Ginger
✔️ Antioxidant & anti-inflammatory
✔️ May help with nausea and digestion

💡 Tip: Steep fresh slices in hot water for a calming tea.

🌶️ Cayenne Pepper (Capsaicin)
✔️ Supports metabolism
✔️ Contains antioxidants with potential anti-cancer effects

🌸 Saffron
✔️ Rich in crocins (carotenoids)
✔️ Studied for potential anti-tumor properties

🌿 Oregano
✔️ High in antioxidants
✔️ Contains compounds that may support cellular health

💡 Tip: Use in marinades to help reduce harmful compounds formed during high-heat cooking.

🧄 Garlic (Allium family)
✔️ Supports immune function
✔️ Linked to reduced cancer risk in some studies

💡 Tip: Chop and let sit ~10 minutes before cooking to activate beneficial compounds (allicin).

✨ Incorporating a variety of herbs and spices into your diet is a simple, natural way to support overall health. While not a cure, they are a powerful complement to a balanced, evidence-based lifestyle.

Strength and Endurance on Tuesday just got a touch more spicy 🌶

Transitioning from last months Kettlebell lunge position into this months goblet position not only will challenge our upper body but our balance as well.

1️⃣ Hold your kettlebell close to your chest in a goblet position

2️⃣ Set your stance to a longer than walking stride length

3️⃣ Add a subtle hinge over your lead leg activating your hamstring and glute

4️⃣ Inhale down into your deep lunge and pushing through your front heel and back toes exhale back to your starting position.

This exercise is great for members who want to increase bone density as well as improve their balance!

💙 Foundation Friday💛

This week we hear from one of our members and her first time trying Foundation Training!

Listen to her experience after her first class and what her experience felt like not only physically but mentally as well!

🧠 Holistic Cancer Care: Why Mental Health Matters

A 2025 clinical guideline highlights a critical shift in oncology: treating not just the disease—but the whole person.

🔬 What was developed?
The Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (C**A) created evidence-based guidelines to integrate psychosocial care into routine cancer treatment.

💡 Key recommendations:

✔️ Routine distress screening
All cancer patients should be regularly screened for psychological distress using structured (often digital) tools.

✔️ Whole-spectrum symptom management
Care should address common challenges like:

Anxiety & depression

Insomnia

Fatigue

Pain & delirium

✔️ Personalized treatment approaches
Includes:

Medications (when needed)

Non-pharmacological strategies (e.g., lifestyle, support care)

Tailored interventions based on patient needs

✔️ Evidence-based psychotherapy
Different therapies are recommended depending on the type and severity of distress—ensuring individualized mental health support.

✔️ Support for families too
Psychosocial care extends beyond patients to include caregivers and family systems.

✨ Why this matters:
Integrating mental health into cancer care improves:

Quality of life

Treatment adherence

Overall patient outcomes

📌 Takeaway:
Cancer care should be holistic—combining medical treatment with structured psychological support for both patients and their families.

This weeks Foundation Friday leads us into a simple but challenging Step Back Progression.

📈If you feel confident in your step back from last week try this progression of adding a hinge.

🌊Be fluid, be stable, and be willing to test your coordination.

🕺🏻We mention a lot in class how to find the balance between tension and intension.

This step back progression is a great way for us to practice being smooth but strong!

📚 Exercise & Breast Cancer Recovery: What the Evidence Says

A 2022 systematic review analyzed how structured exercise impacts physical fitness in breast cancer patients and survivors—and the results are compelling.

🔬 What was studied?
Researchers reviewed randomized controlled trials focusing on exercise interventions (aerobic, resistance, or combined) in women during and after breast cancer treatment.

💡 Key findings:

✔️ Improves physical fitness
Exercise helps maintain or improve:

Cardiorespiratory fitness

Muscle strength

Overall physical function

✔️ Reduces fatigue
Regular physical activity can significantly decrease cancer-related fatigue—a common and debilitating symptom.

✔️ Enhances quality of life
Participants reported better overall well-being and daily functioning.

✔️ Prevents decline during treatment
For patients undergoing treatment, exercise helps protect against physical deterioration.

✔️ Boosts recovery post-treatment
Survivors showed measurable improvements across fitness and health outcomes.

✨ Takeaway:
Exercise is not just safe—it’s a powerful supportive therapy in breast cancer care, improving both physical and quality-of-life outcomes.
