CST post 4

Continuing from CST post 2, imagine your 3-dimensional connective tissue matrix and its core endpoint as a pollywog-shaped membrane surrounding your brain and spinal cord. Upon closer examination, we see the pollywog membrane is actually three layers: a tough mother outer layer, a weblike middle layer and a gentle mother inner layer. Your gentle mother (pia mater) is lovely, transparent, glistening and magically infused with cerebrospinal fluid that passes through it, into and out of the brain and spinal cord. One particularly elegant feature of the phantasmagorical House we live in.

Dolphin Story Post 4 —
Enchanted by the depth in a dolphin’s eye

We are 100% opposed to dolphin captivity. It is our intention to help eradicate both capture and killing of wild cetaceans. The captive dolphins shown in this post were unable to return to the wild. For six years I traveled back and forth to the Caribbean to visit them and keep them company, until their passing in 2013. We share this story in hopes of bringing awareness and appreciation of dolphins’ magnificent depth of feeling, intelligence and soul. We also point to a sanctuary model for respectful, compassionate care of existing captive dolphins unable to return to the wild.

CST post 2
Our Home: the connective tissue matrix we live in.

Imagine your body, inside your skin, as a complex matrix, a mold or meshwork of connective tissue that includes your bones, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, internal organs and structures down to the cellular level. Imagine this whole-body meshwork to be one entirely interconnected entity. Wiggle a toe and the movement will ripple up into the head. Tighten the gut and it will pull the neck forward and compress the jaw .

This matrix we live in contains relatively hard things like femurs or vertebrae, and super soft things like pleura or the outer lining of the eyeball. Its crazily complex! One might say, miraculously so. And this is the marvelous, interconnected inner world we all inhabit.

Now, imagine this 3D mold-meshwork existing as your entire form, from the skin all the way to your core — to your brain and spinal cord. Here, at the central nervous system, the matrix ends, as it becomes a pollywog-shaped membrane surrounding your brain and spinal cord (see CST post 1).

Or so we thought …
Research has revealed that the matrix continues into the brain and spinal cord by way of Glial cells — Astrocytes to be specific. Their story shall be continued …

Craniosacral System:
The environment of our central nervous system

Imagine your brain and spinal cord as one unit surrounded by a pollywog-shaped membrane. Imagine the brain portion of this membrane surrounded by all the bones of your cranium, and the spinal cord portion surrounded by each of your vertebrae, as it travels through your spinal canal and connects to your sacrum. Consider this a functional unit from cranium to sacrum.

Then add to it cerebrospinal fluid, encased within the membrane, and an intricate system by which the cerebrospinal fluid travels into and out of the brain and spinal cord, cleansing and nourishing our body”s major control center. This is the craniosacral system.
