Now that the weather is warming up, are you spending more time walking, gardening, and being active?🏋️ Are you noticing that you are having more back and hip pain than normal?😅 If you answered yes to either of those questions, let's talk about the psoas muscle!🍑
The psoas muscle plays a crucial role in movement and stability, so when it becomes tight or overly tense, it can have various impacts on the body. Here are some common effects:
✨ Lower back pain: Tightness in the psoas can pull on the lumbar spine, contributing to lower back pain. This is because the psoas attaches to the lumbar vertebrae and can affect their alignment and mobility.
✨ Hip pain or stiffness: The psoas connects the lumbar spine to the top of the femur (thigh bone) and is involved in hip flexion. When tight, it can restrict hip movement and cause discomfort or stiffness in the hip joint.
✨ Posture issues: A tight psoas can contribute to poor posture, particularly by causing an anterior pelvic tilt. This means the pelvis tilts forward, leading to an exaggerated curve in the lower back (lordosis) and potentially causing discomfort.
✨ Impaired movement: Since the psoas is involved in various movements such as walking, running, and bending, tightness in this muscle can limit range of motion and flexibility, affecting overall mobility.
These are just a few of the ways the psoas can impact the body. Stretching these muscles can greatly help them relax to relieve any pain. To learn how to stretch the psoas and other hip flexor muscles, you can watch our YouTube video that Dr. Dee and Dr. Geskie put together to walk you through it!
