Celebrating freedom, unity, and progress. Happy Juneteenth!
On June 19, 1865, African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were notified of their freedom, putting into effect the Emancipation Proclamation issued over two and a half years earlier. As the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth marks a celebration of freedom and justice. We reflect on the significance of this day and our nationβs ongoing journey toward equality for all.
