Dementia care tip #2 Establish routines but be flexible if your loved ones deviates. In my 20 years of working with Dementia patients, I have found that they are similar to those suffering from autism in that schedules provide emotional security for them. They know what to expect and when things are chaotic that is when you have behavior problems. The main difference between the two diseases is that the Dementia patient emotionally desires the schedule but cannot remember the schedule. So, provide gentle reminders like “Good morning, Momma. It is time to get get ready for breakfast”. This generation lived by schedules and a routine will help. Try to do the same order every day. Hope this helps!

Dementia Caregiver tip #1: You join their world and not vice versa. Many caregivers try to reorient their loved ones to reality without realizing that what the dementia patient believes to be happening is their reality. It is okay if they believe it is 1942. Especially at the latter stages. Trying to reorient can cause anger, frustration, and behavioral issues. Make both of your lives easier and affirm what he/she believes to be true and show them love.
