Pertussis (also known as “whooping cough” or the “100 day cough”) cases have been rising steadily over the past several years with 2 infant deaths occurring since the start of 2025.
Prior to the introduction of the vaccines in the 1940s, the US had more than 200,000 cases of pertussis every year. That number dropped significantly after introduction of the vaccine, but has been rising steadily since the pandemic with more than 35,000 cases in 2024.
Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent pertussis. An unvaccinated person is over 80% likely to become infected if exposed to the bordatella pertussis bacteria.
