It’s a holiday countdown. How do you celebrate the holidays?
An additional way we celebrate is by cooking and baking with friends which includes all of our programs such as seniors, ETs, real children and youth and even staff doing some immersion. When we cook during the holidays we are sharing recipes, traditions, and building community. It is also a great way for our students to practice their home management skills and to demonstrate to them exactly why those skills are needed.

It’s a holiday countdown. How do you celebrate the holidays?
A further way we celebrate is by wrapping and making gifts. It’s important for our students to know they are able to do the things they use to do. Truly it is not what you can see but what you can do.

It’s a holiday countdown. How do you celebrate the holidays?
A another way we celebrate is by participating in the parade of lights. The parade allows all of our programs to participate together from our children and youth to our seniors and even families. The parade allows us to put the saavi name out there and show off our mobility skills by wrapping our canes in lights and walking the parade route with pride.

It’s a holiday countdown. How do you celebrate the holidays?
A second way we celebrate is by decorating. We make our office sites so festive with bows garland a variety of decorations, we decorate trees, and even decorate our canes. By helping decorate around the building the students are reminded they can decorate their own homes and that decorations are not all visual. It also helps the students remember it’s not what you can see it what you can do.

It’s a holiday countdown. How do you celebrate the holidays?
One way we celebrate is by shopping for gifts. Our students get to practice their mobility skills by navigating the mall in search of gifts for each other.

Today is “bake cookies day” so we are celebrating Throwback Thursday by taking a look back at one of our past Saturday Real children and youth events when the students and staff planned a day in and wore pajamas and baked cookies. Approaching and then sticking your hands into something as hot as a oven can been startling when you are blind or when your are a child but getting the opportunity to practice the skill safely allows our young students to feel comfortable and confident around any hot objects.
