Happy World Breastfeeding Week! Today’s video is a long one, but it’s well overdue! It’s honestly not easy for me to talk about my own journey into motherhood, which was unfortunately quite traumatizing but also blessed me with the most amazing child I could have ever asked for. Even though our journey didn’t go as I had imagined, I kept breastfeeding and pumping through it all, and I’m so proud of myself for every drop of breastmilk that I worked so hard to be able to provide for her! In honor of this special week and the wonderful perinatal support community in Tucson that has made me feel so safe and accepted, I wanted to take a moment to share my story with you and to explain what inspired me to become a lactation consultant.

📣 Thrive Theory is growing! Please join us as we welcome Antoinette Cornelius, CLC to the team! Antoinette will be offering home visits and telehealth appointments, and she is in-network with United Healthcare and Cigna. Take a look at her bio below and follow her at breastfeedwithantoinette to learn more! 👀

Antoinette Cornelius is a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Arizona State University. She spent over a decade working in engineering consulting, where she developed a strong foundation in customer support, education, and communication.

After becoming a mother of three and facing her own breastfeeding challenges, especially difficulty finding quality support, Antoinette was inspired to shift careers and pursue her passion for maternal and infant health . She has been serving families as a practicing CLC since 2024 and has been training with Katie Cohen, IBCLC, throughout this time. In addition, she has been a Breastfeeding USA Counselor since April 2025, providing peer-to-peer support to families navigating their feeding journeys.

Originally from Willcox, Arizona, Antoinette is honored to be back in her home state after years of supporting her husband’s military career. Drawing from her experience working in male-dominated industries as a working mother, Antoinette has a particular interest in supporting families through the transition back to work. Whether you plan to return to work or not, Antoinette is most committed to supporting you to meet your breastfeeding goals.

📣 Personal and Professional Development Update! 📣

I’m honored to share that I am stepping in as Chair of the United States Lactation Consultant Association’s Advisory Board!

Having served as USLCA’s Professional Development Coordinator for the last year, I’ve gained unique insight into the needs of the lactation consultant community and the opportunities for growth in our field. I’m excited to bring this perspective into my leadership of the Advisory Board as we support USLCA’s efforts to advance health equity, expand access to lactation care, and advocate for lactation consultants across the United States.

Together with an outstanding team of impact-driven, diverse thought leaders across the birth work space, we’ll continue driving progress and creating meaningful change for families, communities, and the future of lactation support.

I look forward to collaborating with the USLCA Board, staff, and community in a new and exciting way as we embark on this new chapter together!

🚩 Infant Oral Dyfunction Red Flags 🚩

Babies compensate in many ways when they have oral dysfunction and a poor latch due to tethers such as tongue tie, neuromuscular disorders, and many other reasons. Not all babies will show all of these signs and this list isn't exhaustive, but if you do notice some of these behaviors please reach out for a full functional suck and latch assessment, and for individualized support and guidance to identify and address the root causes!

- Passively feeding, gulping letdown and then getting frustrated after letdown slows
- Trembling chin/lower lip after feedings (fatigue from mentalis muscle overuse)
- Lips curled under during feedings
- Suck blisters on lips, "two-toned" lips
- Cheeks dimpling, sucking in during feedings
- Feeding for >45 minutes at a time, >12 times per day
- Alternatively, very short feeds due to fatigue
- Won't open mouth widely to latch on
- Head bobbing during feeds
- Biting, clamping, or chompy latch and suck

Appointments are available via telehealth, in-office, or in-home, and most insurance plans cover Thrive Theory's services 100% with no out of pocket costs. Visit http://ThriveTheoryLactation.com for more info!

📣 Exciting news! I'm heading back to school to pursue a Master's in Healthcare Innovation! 📣

In order to focus on my education while I continue to provide lactation care to the families that Thrive Theory serves, I'll be transitioning out of my role as the Professional Development Coordinator of the United States Lactation Consultant Association (USLCA) in the new year. If you are an IBCLC who is interested in a part time role that offers unique opportunities to support and empower other lactation consultants on a national scale, don't miss your chance to apply for this position! Any interested colleagues can reach out for more information.

As a lifelong learner, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to start this journey and to equip myself with new tools and skills that will help me contribute to future innovation in the world of lactation and infant feeding!

Thanks to everyone who came out today to visit me today at the Tucson Birth and Baby Fest!

Empowered, informed, and supported is best! All parents need to be given the information, tools, and resources to make informed feeding decisions and decide what is best for them, without judgment. While I wholeheartedly believe in the power of human milk, I'm also not ashamed to share that my own breastfeeding journey included formula supplementation due to a variety of medical and mental health factors, although I'll always wonder if things would have been different in my own breastfeeding journey had I been completely empowered, informed, and supported along the way. These days, I strive to be the lactation consultant that I wish I had back when I was dealing with my own incredibly complex breastfeeding journey and low milk supply!

Please join me tomorrow, 10/16 at 5:30 PM for October's Birth Connection Meet-up hosted by Kelsey at .birth.services

I'll be diving deep into risk factors for low milk supply and how we can work together as a community to better support and empower families with infant feeding.

Please RSVP to .birth.services for the address for tomorrow's event, and check out my blog post on low milk supply at http://ThriveTheoryLactation.com for more info!

I also want to give a big shoutout to for providing me with some wonderful resources for this event!
