According to a Ukrainian legend, a poor mother had no decorations for her Christmas tree. While everyone was sleeping, a friendly spider spun a web to decorate the tree. The Roman word "pallium" refers to a person's cape or cloak, often used in relation to a soldier. When the person passed away, they were covered in the cloak. This led to the term "pall" and is a heavy, usually white, and sometimes ornate cloth that is draped over the casket. The terms "casket bearer" and "pall" were merged together to create the term "pallbearer" which refers to a person who carries the casket during a funeral service.
